BWIM's Lenten Devotional:
Seek Discomfort | |
This Lenten devotional created for the BWIM community is designed to challenge and inspire you on your Lenten journey. Lead author, Mari Wiles, along with other writers from the BWIM community, invite you to step beyond the comfortable into the discomfort of honest self-reflection. Lent is a time for confronting our shadows, acknowledging our privilege, and embracing the discomfort of growth. This devotional provides opportunities for you to explore scripture, reflect in prayer, and engage in opportunities for restorative action. Devotions begin on Ash Wednesday, continue weekly through Lent, and then are offered daily during Holy Week.
Now there are even more ways to support Baptist Women in Ministry! And we've brought back and updated an old favorite with new options! Order today and have it in time to rep BWIM proudly during BWIM Month of Advocacy! Multiple colors and sizes available!

As women in ministry and leadership, we often find that our lived experiences inform our experiences with the Holy. Cole Arthur Riley offers a path to validating that truth through this powerful book.
"In these deeply transporting pages, Arthur Riley reflects on the stories of her grandmother and father, and how they revealed to her an embodied, dignity-affirming spirituality, not only in what they believed but in the act of living itself."

In Invisible Women: Data Bias in a World Designed for Men, Caroline Criado Perez reveals how a male-centric worldview systematically overlooks and disadvantages half the population. She exposes the "gender data gap"—a fundamental lack of knowledge about women—as the root of this systemic discrimination. This gap creates a pervasive, often invisible, bias with profound consequences for women's lives. Perez demonstrates how everything from urban planning and architecture to medical research and GDP calculations is often based on the "default male," meaning design choices, research, and financial decisions are frequently made with

incomplete information. These failures to incorporate data about women result in outcomes ranging from mere discomfort and inaccessibility to life-threatening situations for women worldwide.
Why is this relevant to BWIM's work? Historically, ministry has been viewed and structured as a male profession. Consequently, the established systems within ministry often cater to men, requiring women to adapt and navigate around them. From the physical design of pulpits to the absence of parental leave policies, and even the theological language we employ, we see evidence that even in settings that affirm women, there's an underlying expectation that they conform to male-centric models of ministry.
This male-centric design of ministry creates barriers for women called to serve. For BWIM, understanding and addressing this inherent bias is crucial. We must actively work to dismantle these systemic barriers, advocating for inclusive practices and structures that empower women to thrive in ministry and leadership, rather than simply survive within a system not designed for them. Only then can the Church truly benefit from the full breadth of women's gifts and perspectives.
