AI Predicts COVID-19 Risks, Severity, Treatment in Hospital Patients
|
Seasonal influenza, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and COVID-19 are actively circulating throughout the United States. These respiratory illnesses are contributing to widespread health concerns, with cases being reported in various regions nationwide.
Using artificial intelligence and machine learning, researchers from Florida Atlantic University’s Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing and College of Engineering and Computer Science, in collaboration with Memorial Healthcare System, are pushing the boundaries in health care to foster innovation, enhance decision-making, and ultimately improve health outcomes for individuals and populations.
Results of the study, published in the journal Diagnostics, show that the models for ICU with mechanical ventilation, ICU, and IMCU admission identified the following factors overlapping as the most important predictors among the three outcomes: age, race, sex, body mass index (BMI), diarrhea, diabetes, hypertension, early stages of kidney disease, and pneumonia.
“This is one of the very few studies that explored such interactions among risk factors using machine learning interpretability approaches. For example, pneumonia combined with diabetes increased mechanical ventilation risk, while diarrhea interacted strongly with diabetes for ICU admissions,” said Debarshi Datta, Ph.D., senior author and an assistant professor at FAU’s Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing. Read More

This year, more than 70 students will receive $500 in scholarship funding. Since nursing students incur higher costs and fees than average students, the scholarship program was established to help Florida Atlantic's aspiring nurses achieve their full potential for academic success. View Photos

Qigong Significantly Decreases Low Back Pain in U.S. Veterans
|
Using qigong, a Chinese practice combining gentle movements, breathing and meditation, Florida Atlantic University researchers designed a novel program and assessed its impact on biopsychosocial outcomes on veterans with chronic low back pain. Specifically, researchers studied how the intervention impacted physical function, sleep disturbance, PTSD, depression, anxiety, positive affect, social roles and activities.
Results of the study, published in the journal Pain Management Nursing, indicate that all pain-related outcomes (pain intensity, low back pain-related disability, and pain interference) decreased significantly in the qigong group compared to the control group. In addition to chronic pain, sleep disturbance was significantly improved in the qigong group compared to the control group. David Newman, Ph.D., professor and statistician, in the Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing, is among the study’s co-authors. Read More

Student Spotlight: Kerry-Ann Dixon '02
|
A desire to serve her community and a passion for nursing inspired Kerry-Ann Dixon, B.S. '02, MSN, RN, IMH-E®, to pursue a Ph.D. program in Health Equity at the Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing. Dixon plans to complete the program in spring 2027.
“Having my Ph.D. in Nursing along with my Infant Mental Health Endorsement will provide me with the credentials to directly drive equitable changes in health care,” Dixon stated.
Her research focuses on the lived experience of Black fathers in the perinatal phase, noting that their involvement has an impact on the health of the parents and child. Dixon believes that by learning more about the fathers' experiences and how they would like to be included, nursing professionals can ensure that they are part of the perinatal period and equip them to advocate for their families, regardless of relationship status, and help reduce the Black maternal and infant mortality rates. Preceptor Spotlight: Alan Eddison, DNP
|
For Alan Eddison, DNP, APRN, being a preceptor for Florida Atlantic nursing students offers him the opportunity to share the vast amounts of knowledge he has gained throughout his 30-plus-year career.
“Preceptors help bridge the gap between didactic learning and clinical practice,” stated Dr. Eddison. “Florida Atlantic students come to their initial clinicals well-prepared, and they are equipped with the background knowledge to start caring for patients in a practical setting. They enter practice with a strong, patient-centered focus.”
In addition to training tomorrow’s health care workers, Dr. Eddison is also the clinical director at the Volunteers in Medicine Clinic in Stuart, FL, which treats low-income, uninsured primary care patients. He also serves as an affiliate assistant professor at Florida Atlantic’s Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing. He teaches Primary 1, Primary 2 and Primary 3 courses, and he has the “privilege” of lecturing once a semester on diabetes.
“Teaching provides a kind of ‘professional immortality,’” noted Dr. Eddison. “In 30 years, I will probably not be practicing anymore, but my students will. Perhaps some of them will become teachers, and they will pass down what they learned from me.” Read More
