Dear South Central LAMP Community,
I’m not sure if anyone else has been feeling exhausted. I sure have, and I know everyone who feels targeted and those trying to support those targeted, have been feeling it too.
It’s been a challenging new year for certain. With so many attacks on the values we hold close to our hearts, it’s no wonder we’re feeling overwhelmed.
But did you know that the Montgomery Bus Boycott took 381 days?! The United Farms Workers ran the No Uvas Campaign and boycotted grapes for five years?! The suffrage movement lasted 72 years?!
Thinking about these movements gives me perspective of how long real change takes. It also reminds me that we are the ones we’ve been waiting for. We are the heroes, no one else is coming. So, as written in a letter by a Hopi elder, “You have been telling the people that this is the Eleventh Hour, now you must go back and tell the people that this is the Hour.”
While the work we are doing is exhausting, and there are moments of disappointment and heartbreak, there have also been moments of victory - seeing people of different races, backgrounds, gender, and abilities - come together to protest, boycott, and support each other, has been inspiring. It turns out we can change the world, we just need to remember we are the ones we’ve been waiting for.
