We’ve made it through what we hope is the last of the deep freeze! (Fingers crossed!) February is here, bringing thoughts of sunshine, creativity, and new projects. Our class lineup is packed with exciting options—brand-new offerings alongside returning favorites. Plus, fresh fabric collections are arriving weekly, including over 30 stunning new batiks! If you’ve been dreaming of a new Baby Lock or Bernina machine, now’s the time—special pricing is in effect on machines, furniture, and software, but price hikes are on the horizon. With the arrival of the Baby Lock Radiance and Bernina 990, we still have a few fantastic previously loved machines available—but they’re going fast! Sew What’s New with Deb?

Debbie LaFrance is back at Sew Vac with an all-new club packed with tips, tricks, and techniques! Each month, she’ll showcase must-have notions, her favorite projects, and fresh approaches to make your sewing life easier. She’ll also be demonstrating on a variety of machines to keep your creativity flowing! She'll be working in the shop a few days each week, so be sure to stop by and give her a warm welcome back. Her new club, "Sew What’s New with Deb?", will be offered at different times and days each month so everyone has a chance to join in the fun! First up:

Pants Class
with Pattie Otto
(Maui or Long Island Pants)
Friday, February 21st

Skill Level: Intermediate
Class Fee: $60
Pants can be so easy to sew. Let Pattie Otto show you how along with some expert fitting advice. Knit or woven fabric? The choice is yours. Great Copy Maui Pants is a full leg pant or capri designed for lightweight woven fabrics, while the Long Island Pant is a slim leg pant for light to mid weight stable knits. Both patterns have pull-on elastic waists and slit pocket options. Pattie will have try-ons of all sizes to aid in obtaining a great fit. After pattern adjustments, layout and cutting, Pattie will help with construction including pockets, hemming and elastic waistband techniques.

Tilda Country Girl Doll with Lisa Cowan

This Tilda doll is so fun to make! Whether you’re an experienced sewist who’d like to try doll-making, a Tilda enthusiast, or someone who just likes the pattern, Lisa will walk you through the construction of the doll on day one, then you’ll make the wardrobe on day two. Tips for using fiberfill, how to get realistic expressions, and adding little custom details will be included. You’ll leave with a doll you’ll be proud to display! (She can watch over your Tilda fabric stash!)

Manchester Jacket Class with Pattie Otto

Class Fee: $100
A good jacket is the pillar of any wardrobe. The Manchester Jacket by Great Copy is a stylish classic with great lines, hood or collar option, in-seam front pockets and a back seam accent. Choose from a variety of fabrics and seam finishes. Class will include measurements to help you determine the correct size. Try-ons will be available to aid in selecting the correct size as well as any pattern alterations that are needed. Jacket construction includes layout, cutting, stabilizing facings, seaming, and hemming. You will leave with a finished jacket.

With experienced instructor Pattie Otto, you’ll learn techniques for a knit pullover that will become a wardrobe staple! She will show you how to cut and stabilize, serge and hem knit fabrics with your serger. Choose from three Great Copy patterns: #2550 Savannah Tee, #2660 LaBelle Tunic, or #2840 Charlotte Dress and Pullover. All have sleeve options and sizing from XX-Small to XXX-Large. Pattie will have all sizes available as try-ons to help in selecting your size.

Are you new to sewing or looking for a refresher? This class will introduce you to sewing while you create a go-everywhere Ten Pocket Tote. Class includes the basics of your sewing machine: mechanics, threading, bobbin winding, and use of seam guides to sew simple seams. You will select fabrics, cut out your tote and learn all about seams, hems, topstitching and attaching handles – and take home a finished tote!

Want to get yourself or your ‘tween involved in a new creative hobby? This class is designed to help beginners with the basics of looking at a pattern, identifying fabrics, laying out and cutting fabric, seaming and hemming a garment. All ages from 12 upward are welcome. Although this is a beginner class, you should know the basics of your machine including bobbin winding, threading, and basic stitching. There are two Sonoma Tee patterns - one for Teens & Tweens, the other for adults. A fine pattern for a spring tee made of cotton batik. Great for a "mother/daughter" day of sewing!

Easy Quilt Project in a Day

This is a great class for those who have not quilted before, or if you have created a top (or several) and aren't sure what to do next! Take the mystery out of the quilting process. Pat will lead you through making a simple pieced block, quilting it, and then binding it. You'll leave with a pretty table topper you'll be proud to show off as your first project - or as a gift!
A kit with all necessary fabrics is included in the class fee.

Pat discovered this variation of the Storm at Sea pattern and can't wait to share it with you! In this version, you can fussy cut the center square within a square. One of the coolest aspects of this pattern? Those "curves" aren't actually curves, but cleverly placed straight seams. Join Pat and make one using your favorite colors and fabrics! Rotary cutting and some piecing experience required. The "Just Piecing" (Square in a Square) session on March 7th would be good practice!

Class Policy
Buy your class supplies with us!
Supplies purchased for our classes and clubs receive a 20% discount.
Payment for classes must be received at the time of registration. If you cancel 7 or more days before class you will be issued a store credit. There will be no refunds or credit for cancellations less than 7 days before class. If we have to cancel a class, we will reschedule the class when possible or refund the fee.
For inclement weather, we follow the Howard County School System schedule.
