February 2025

Into The Dharma Room

As we approach our first retreat this year, we may hesitate at the threshold. Should we attend the retreat? Can we sit in silence for three days? Perhaps there is something else that seems more urgent.

Or are these some of those mistaken views which are endless? Rest assured that, however you answer these questions, you are always accepted in this sangha.

Our temple rules say that “for nine years Bodhidharma sat silently in Sorim.” According to some accounts, this occurred after he was rejected by the Shaolin Temple in China. While we don’t know much about Bodhidharma, we can guess that he had his own mistaken views to cut through during those years in silence.

Bodhidharma persisted and, after nine years, returned to Shaolin Temple where he established the Chan tradition. He is considered the first patriarch of Chan Buddhism whose lineage includes the Chinese ancestors we are focusing on in Kyol Che this year.

So in the months ahead let’s embrace our practice wholeheartedly, regardless of our thoughts. And know that you are always welcome in the Blue Heron Zen Community.

Yours in the dharma,

Bob Kutter, Dharma Teacher

Kyol Che 2025

Kyol Che, our three-month intensive period, began on Sunday, January 26 and will end on Sunday, April 27.

This year we will focus on six of our Chinese ancestors and their teachings: Hui-neng, Ma-tsu, Nan-ch’uan, Chao-chou, Lin-chi, and Te-shan. (You may have already met them face to face in your Kong-an training.)

These Masters played critical roles in the development of Zen and formed the backbone of the tradition that has been transmitted from ancient China through Korea and down to us at Blue Heron and Golden Wind.

Workshops will be held every other Sunday morning. During each workshop we will focus on one of these teachers. We aim to make these sessions as interactive and immersive as possible.

On Sundays when workshops are not presented, our teachers will offer Dharma Dialogues.

This year’s Kyol Che will be led by Zen Master Jeong Bong. Please address any questions to him.

Our Senior Dharma Teachers are offering online Dharma Dialogues if you would like to discuss your practice and ask questions. Please get in touch with them individually to schedule an appointment if you would like a one-on-one Zoom meeting.

Chanting Requests

Once a month, we set aside time in our Sunday practice to express compassion for anyone who is suffering or recently deceased. Kwan Seum Bosal chanting is for anyone who is suffering. Ji Jang Bosal chanting is for the recently deceased. We invite you to register the names of loved ones for either chant. We will recite the names when we do special chanting.

Looking Forward
