New Professional Registration Licensure System

The Missouri Division of Professional Registration, along with its respective boards, has implemented a modern licensure system known as MOPRO, which operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, throughout the entire year. MOPRO provides users with continuous access to their information and services, including:

  • Applying for a professional license
  • Renewing a license, regardless of whether the renewal is timely or overdue
  • Submitting online payments for licenses, duplicate licenses, or licensure verification
  • Updating personal information such as name, address, or other contact details
  • Modifying corporate officers or ownership of a licensed business

Ethically Speaking: Ethics and Language

by Kate Drewry, MSW, LCSW

As social workers, we understand the importance of communication; language influences how people think and behave. In recognition of the power of words, our Code of Ethics says this about social workers’ responsibilities to clients:

Social workers should not use derogatory language in their written, verbal, or electronic communications to or about clients. Social workers should use accurate and respectful language in all communications to and about clients. (p.16)

THEME OF SOCIAL WORK MONTH 2025: Social Work: Compassion + Action

Your Inspiration for the Month

This month’s Inspiration is “Resignation” (https://poets.org/poem/resignation) by Nikki Giovanni (https://poets.org/poet/nikki-giovanni). It’s a powerful love poem that feels like what love sometimes is— being drawn into connection magnetically, with force and fusion beyond our control. But what could do Giovanni justice? In addition to studying (and breathing) poetry, she was an activist, an advocate for Black civil rights and justice, and she even studied social work! Read it aloud, relish the words, and imagine who (or perhaps what) Giovanni loved like this. What do you love this forcefully?

Governor Kehoe's State of the State

Tuesday afternoon, Governor Mike Kehoe delivered the first State of the State of his administration. His address had a strong focus on public safety, economic development, education, childcare, and support for Missouri's agricultural communities and veterans. In addition to the policy proposals outlined in the speech, the Governor unveiled a high-level overview of his budget recommendations. Additional details on the budget proposals will be released in the coming weeks.

This report outlines the major priorities addressed in the Governor's speech as well as many of the accompanying budget recommendations.

Information on the Freeze on Federal Grants and Loans

Rumors were flying on Monday, 1-27-25, and Tuesday, 1-28-25 about which federal programs might be impacted by President Trump's executive order on freezing funding for federal programs.

The executive order was temporarily blocked by a federal judge.  Here's an article about the block

On 1-28-25, the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) issued a statement about which programs would be impacted and which ones wouldn't, clarifying that programs like Medicaid and SNAP were not a part of the executive order.

Interim Executive Director

As you read in last month’s newsletter, I am serving as the very part-time interim director of the NASW-MO Chapter. My goal is to help keep the Missouri Chapter running much as it did during Cassie Brown’s tenure. The search to find a new executive director is under way, and several applications have been received. The application deadline is Monday, 2-10-25 and the search committee hopes to conduct the first round of interviews at the end of the month.
