Oscar season is in full swing as is Kate Hearst's film series covering Fifty Years of Steven Spielberg's Magic. The next installment on Tuesday, February 11, 2025, will focus on Saving Private Ryan (1998), which garnered Spielberg the Academy Award for best director but suffered an upset in the category of best picture. Tom Hanks received one of his six nominations for best actor. Watch or rewatch the movie this weekend during the winter storm. Then come to class to discuss the making of the film, to examine the characters, stories, and conflicts Spielberg developed, to explore the techniques that define his cinematic vision, and to analyze the continued relevance of this film today.
Special Guest Kirk Saduski will join the discussion. Saduski has been a producer and executive at Playtone, the film company established by Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman. He was executive-in-charge of the HBO mini-series Band of Brothers, and co-producer of the HBO mini series John Adams and The Pacific, the HBO movie Game Change, and the HBO documentary David McCullough: Painting with Words. Saduski is also a co-producer of Apple TV+’s Masters of the Air.
For those unable to attend the live conversation, the session will be recorded and made available for subsequent viewing by registered students.
