Hello from Kate

This past month I had the privilege of attending the swearing in of three new firefighters for the town of New Canaan. Adelaide joined me and I watched her eyes widen into saucers as she listened to the accomplishments and demands of each new career firefighter; particularly when she witnessed a woman taking her oath, and again when we watched our dear friend, surrounded by his family, take his oath. With the backdrop of the still raging fires in California, seeing friends, family, fellow firefighters, and our First Selectman all gathered for the ceremony provided the weight and gravitas that the moment deserved. The room at Town Hall was absolutely brimming with the kind of gratitude and respect we expect from our community and Adelaide and I were honored to be in attendance.

It’s moments like the above that remind me how the services our town offers are boast worthy. But I’d take it one step further to say the level of service is beyond compare. Our town constantly strives to keep each other safe and informed. The myriad resources that are available truly make this a town in which we can all consider Staying Put. Take for instance the notice from the Fire Marshal to offer free fire prevention home inspections (call Fire Marshal Paul Payne 203-594-3030!) or the complimentary security assessments from New Canaan Police Department (call Officer Adams at 203-989-6050). This is the kind of anticipatory action we can take now that will allow us to remain safe at home, and keep our dedicated service providers focused on the big emergencies. Because those are going to happen. But let’s leverage these readily available services. Why not? And let’s also make sure we say “Thank you!”
