Exciting News from our Director:
Greetings loyal Lunenburg Library community!
I am reaching out today with incredibly exciting news about our Teen Room Renovation project. We are anticipating the construction to start on January 24th. That is this coming week!
I am so grateful to the other community members who have helped the library reach this stage of the project. The Select Board, Town Manager, Facilities Department, the architect, Friends of the Lunenburg Public Library and the Library Trustees have all been instrumental in getting this far. This project has been in our minds for a number of years, and we have been actively trying to bring it to fruition for nearly two years now.
I am excited to share some details about the impact of this project. The project will expand our current Teen Room by about 40% by removing the wall between the Teen Room and the current Director's Office; it will create a new Director's Office; and it will create a new multipurpose office and meeting room. We will sacrifice one row of shelving where we display our ongoing Friends of the Library Book Sale, but we will continue to display some of these books near the front of the library.
This expansion is a vital change to the library that will help support the large number of students who visit the library after school, and create an even more welcoming and inspiring space for this important demographic. The change will also increase the accessibility to all of our physical resources by giving teens a dedicated space large enough to feel welcoming and supportive.
I anticipate the project to need at least 8 weeks of work. During this period, we will be setting up some temporary shelving for some of our Teen Room materials. This shelving will be located in the Main Hall, and much of the Teen Room collection will remain available to browse and circulate. Some books will need to be packed into storage but will likely remain available to fulfill holds.
Similarly, during our "after school hours" from 2:30-4 we will be reserving half of our public access computers in the Main Hall for Teen use. Our Young Adult Librarian will be present in this area most days to assist the teens. We do ask for your patience and understanding during this construction project, as the end product will be an invaluable improvement for all library users.
Inevitably, there will also be some added noise during construction. Although we have planned for much of that work to be done before the library opens on any given day, there will be some overlap. So, again, we ask for patience and understanding. Our Library is a gem and this project will only improve it. We can't wait to show you the finished project! Follow along with updates on our social media. As always, we are glad to be at your service and look forward to your next visit!
