The Alliance is actively engaged on several key pieces of legislation this session. HB 1093, relative to public charter schools and governmental land use exemptions, is a technical cleanup bill that clarifies chartered public schools have governmental use status for land-use purposes and are subject to the same municipal requirements as other public entities. Sponsored by Rep. Donnelly, the bill has passed the House and is now under consideration in the Senate.
HB 222, which repeals the requirement for a memorandum of understanding between chartered public schools and districts regarding special education services and makes related updates, has passed the Senate with an amendment and is now awaiting further action in the House.
Additionally, HB 1358, establishing a commission to study transitioning all public schools to chartered public schools, is being closely monitored. It has passed the House and is now before the Senate Education Committee.
The Alliance continues to track a broader set of legislation, including proposals related to open enrollment, special education, and school funding.
