February 2026 Newsletter

HAPPY BLACK HISTORY MONTH! Black History Month is both a celebration and a call to action. It is a time to honor the generations of Black leaders, organizers, and community members whose work has shaped Cincinnati’s neighborhoods and strengthened collective efforts to improve quality of life. It also invites reflection on how historic and ongoing inequities continue to affect access to safe housing, healthy food, economic opportunity, and welcoming public spaces. Through the Live Work Play Cincinnati Coalition, this shows up in neighborhood-led strategies guided by policy, systems, and environmental assessments that highlight inequities embedded in local systems and inform more intentional, data-informed, and community-responsive approaches. As a coalition, we remain committed to centering lived experience, supporting Black-led solutions, and advancing partnerships that create conditions to thrive.

As a member, we encourage you to take part in celebrations, patronize Black-owned businesses, and deepen your understanding of Black history in Cincinnati, not only this month, but throughout the year! Check out these resources:

February Spotlight

LWPC February 2026 Spotlight:

Sonya Williams

Accreditation Coordinator,

Cincinnati Health Department,

Community Health and Environmental Services

Sonya Williams is the Accreditation Coordinator for the Cincinnati Health Department, where she has spent the past four years supporting continuous improvement efforts that strengthen programs, systems, and services for the community. In this role, she helps align public health practices with national accreditation standards, ensuring the department operates efficiently, transparently, and responsively to community needs. Her work directly supports better health outcomes by promoting accountability, data-informed decision-making, and collaboration across teams and partners.

Before transitioning to public health, Sonya dedicated 24 years to public safety, serving in emergency communications. Throughout her career, she played a critical role in supporting first responders and the public during high-stress, time-sensitive situations, developing a deep appreciation for clear communication, operational readiness, and service under pressure. Her previous experience in operations, training, and quality assurance continues to inform her approach to accreditation and quality improvement, grounding her work in real-world impact and community safety.

Across both public safety and public health, Sonya remains driven by a shared mission of serving the community through systems that are reliable, effective, and, more importantly, people-centered.

Outside of work, Sonya enjoys playing tennis, traveling, and spending time with her family, especially her two “amazing” grandchildren, who have also caught the travel bug!
