The Sufficiency of Christ
What plus Jesus do you think it would take to make you happy? In some ways, that’s really a trick question. If it takes anything but Jesus for you to be happy, you are most likely identifying an idol in your life. Jesus is sufficient to help you become what God intended before the Fall. God gives us many things for our enjoyment, but our real happiness and joy can only come from Him and through Him.
Wouldn’t it be great if there was a book in the Bible that communicated this message and taught us how to live in that reality? God is good; He provided that book. We call it Colossians. Paul, from prison, had much to complain about, be discontent over, and think about negatively, and yet, God inspired him to write a book about the sufficiency of Christ.
We’ll get a good start into Colossians over the month of February:
Christ gives us everything we need through the Gospel, 1:1-8
Christ gives us everything we need through Prayer, 1:9-14
Christ gives us everything we need to be right with God the Father, 1:15-23
Christ gives us everything we need to understand the mysteries of God, 1:24-2:5
The story of Colossians is consistent with all of Scripture. God created the world and designed men and women to walk with Him, enjoy Him, and glorify Him. Once sin entered into the world through Adam and Eve, we all became sinful participants, guilty; we prove regularly we are sinners. Only through the Promised Deliverer could the sin problem be addressed. He suffered once for all. He lived perfectly, died sacrificially, and was raised supernaturally.
When we read Colossians, we see He is the answer. We learn of His grace, mercy, and provision. He came to restore us to a relationship with God. He gives what the world cannot give, lasting joy, peace, and love.
Our church family memory verse will be Colossians 2:6-7, “Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in Thanksgiving.”
As we make our way through the gospels in the NT reading plan, remember what Jesus did to provide salvation for us. Watch Him train His disciples who will make disciples, knowing it will eventually lead to us being and making disciples. God has given us His Word for us to know Him, walk with Him, and find our full satisfaction in Him alone.
The Gospels record the Event of Christ’s Coming. The Letters explain Christ’s Coming. Pray that God will speak clearly, personally, and corporately as we spend time reading, studying, and meditating on the words, sentences, and paragraphs of Colossians, “Let the Word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God” (3:16).
Our sufficiency is in Christ. We have much to give thanks for personally and corporately. I look forward to our upcoming Family Gatherings each week!

We welcome Nathan Morrison to the Children's and Family Ministry team. Nathan has been on staff at Lawndale for four years, first serving as Outreach and Activities Director and most recently leading Outreach and Local Missions, which includes working with our community partners, planning churchwide events (like Trunk or Treat and Feed the Hunger), and reaching out to Joyner Elementary School. Nathan and his wife, Liz, are in an exciting season. Their baby girl is due very soon! They can't wait for baby Elaine to be born. Nathan has also been recommended to the church for a call to a pastorate. He will share his testimony at the next business meeting, with a church vote the following Sunday during the morning service. His new role in Children's and Family Ministry connects him with newborns to 5th grade and their parents. At LBC, he will continue to share his love for Jesus and provide a fun and safe environment where kids can learn about and grow in the life God offers through Jesus. We are happy and thankful to have him serve with the Next Gen team.

A word of encouragement: Jesus is the Prince of Peace
Jesus has many titles. They give us insight into who he is and what he is doing. One of those titles is the “Prince of Peace.” (Isaiah 9:6) This is one of the names given to him as head of his government. We look forward to that day when he will sit on his throne to rule and bring peace to the world. Interestingly, Jesus also spoke of the peace he would give to us today as we live in this world. He said to his disciples as he was preparing them for when he would go away, “Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.” (John 14:27) He also revealed that it would be the Holy Spirit through whom this peace would come.
The question for us is, “How do we tap into this peace?” The Apostle Paul in his letter to the Philippians gives us several ways to do just that. 1) Rejoice in the Lord always; again, I will say, rejoice. 2) Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. 3) The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, 4) but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. (Philippians 4:4-6)
This is the result: “And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:7) One day Jesus will reign in his government and bring peace to the world. Today if we follow the steps prescribed by his Spirit he will bring peace to our hearts.

This month, we’re going to be learning a new song together titled “As for Me and My House.” While steeped in Scripture throughout the song, the title comes from Joshua 24:15: “And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the LORD, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”
After Joshua’s affirmation of God’s lordship over his life and the lives of those in his house, the people of Israel follow suit and declare the same. We have the opportunity to do that very thing today: not only to point our own families to the goodness, greatness, and holiness of God, but in so doing we might also lead those around us to follow in pronouncing God’s praiseworthiness with their families.
As we sing this song together, we will also sing words similar to the ancient creeds: “Praise the Father, Praise the Son, Praise the Spirit now in us; let every heart and every tongue praise the one true God!”
I look forward to praising the one true God together with you all this coming month!
