President's Message

February marks the beginning of our winter/spring semester.

We have a full and varied range of courses, lots of activities, and a large group of engaged members, as you can see from the stories in this newsletter.

For me, this includes dipping my toe into technological waters by coordinating my first hybrid class. We have top-of-the line equipment at ALL that allows a class to consist of both in-person and online members as a single, integrated class.

I have coordinated only a handful of courses, which is nothing compared with the contributions of long-time coordinators like Larry Brown, Marlyn Nouri, Stew Goodwin, Pat McKean, Joe Gonzáles and so many more. I have taken and enjoyed several hybrid courses, including those conducted by David Mulligan, Jane Ward and Steve Munroe.

I am hardly tech-savvy, but our Office Manager, Cynthia Jayne certainly is. I recently attended a two-hour session led by Tom Schaefer, an Associate Professor at Cape Cod Community College, which helped demystify some of the technology and gave me the confidence to get started. Tom has graciously agreed to offer another workshop in March to help coordinators strengthen their hybrid or Zoom classes. He may come to regret this generous offer, as it is guaranteed he will be hearing from me. No good deed goes unpunished.

Our expanding ability to offer classes and programs online began, like that of many other educational institutions, during Covid. It has evolved to make it possible for ALL members to attend classes, when joining us on campus is difficult to impossible. For those of you reading this in Florida, or other warm climes, for example, a trip to Hyannis for a weekly class would be … challenging.

So if your sister lives in Naples (either one) or Nome and wants to take that course you are raving about, we are happy to welcome her as a member.

And now we all march on to March. In person and online.

Paul Coteus Celebration of Life

ALL mourns the loss of our immediate Past President and dear friend, Paul Coteus. Paul was a nationally recognized scholar and engineer who contributed to over 200 patents.

Upon retiring, Paul researched techniques to mitigate climate change. He was a popular ALL coordinator with a passion for the Cape Cod environment. His leadership left a longlasting legacy to our community.

Carol Coteus, also a popular ALL coodinator, shared that Paul passed away peacefully at home on January 24th after battling pancreatic cancer.

Paul’s family invites ALL members to join them in celebrating Paul’s legacy and supporting his family as they navigate this difficult time.
