February may be the shortest month, but it always feels very full. The year is no longer new, so calendars fill up accordingly as we push to make each week productive, yet there are still times set aside to acknowledge important dates and each other. We celebrated Black History Month, and I hope you had a chance to learn more about the contributions of Black Americans to our nation’s past, present, and future. An important figure in our region’s Black history, the Honorable Gyna M. Bivens, was laid to rest in Fort Worth on February 21 after a battle with cancer. She served multiple terms on Fort Worth’s City Council and was Mayor Pro Tem when she retired. We offer our condolences not only to her friends and family, but to her many constituents, colleagues, and charitable causes that are experiencing the loss of a dedicated and fiery leader.
This month also included the celebrations for Lunar New Year, Mardi Gras, and the start of Ramadan — all on the same day! With so much happening, we appreciate the time you spend with WTS even more. Thank you to everyone who read Rich Girl Nation and joined us at Times Ten Cellars to discuss it at this year’s Book Club meeting. Our next upcoming event is Lagers & Leadership at Salute Wine Bar in Fort Worth on March 10. Chapter members are invited to hear from BNSF Railway’s Lacy Kreger about her professional journey and lessons learned. The first Professional Development event of the year is scheduled for March 26 at NCTCOG in Arlington — stay tuned for more details.
Registration is open for the Annual Scholarship and Awards Banquet on April 24 in Westlake, and we really need your help. We need you to attend, sponsor, invite your colleagues, donate raffle items, and get excited about what is sure to be a fantastic evening. Please email recognitions@wtsgreaterdfw.com if you would like to be a part of making this event happen. We will be honoring local students, professionals, and projects and raising money so we can keep doing so in the future. Your support means a great deal to us. If you would like to dress for the occasion, guests are encouraged to wear black and white. You can also register for the 2026 Annual Conference being held May 5–7 in L.A. Early Bird Registration has been extended to March 6.
There is much more to come this year for the Greater Dallas/Fort Worth Chapter, including a mentoring program relaunch, technical tours, service events, and collaboration with other transportation professionals in North Texas and beyond. We hope you will continue to move forward with us. Speaking of which, do not forget to move your clocks an hour ahead on March 8 for Daylight Savings Time. 😊
