Despite recent snow conditions, construction continues to make steady progress. New Community Learning Center at Peace Dale Library

Community Learning Center Project Update - January 2026

Construction is underway at the new Community Learning Center, with significant work taking place in the Main Reading Room of the Peace Dale Library. Major renovations are focused on the balcony, which has been taken down to the frame to allow for the installation of additional structural support and to prepare the space for future public use.

As part of the restoration effort, original woodwork will be reused wherever possible, preserving the historic character and aesthetic of this cherished space while ensuring it meets modern safety and accessibility standards.

To make library access as convenient as possible during construction, our two (2) other branches, Kingston Free Library and Robert Beverly Hale Library will be open with extended hours during this time.

Kingston Free Library

Kingston Free Library Refresh Underway

Painting and building repairs are continuing at the Kingston Free Library as we give the building a refresh inside and out in anticipation of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

First built from 1775–1776, this building later served as one of Rhode Island's five rotating statehouses, where the General Assembly would meet. In 1790, delegates drafted Rhode Island's Bill of Rights and Amendments in this building before the state ratified the U.S. Constitution.

The building was first opened as a library in 1895.

Work on the exterior will resume in the spring of 2026 as weather allows.
