COG’s current COVID-19 Update

FAITH that Works
2.21.21
Be patient, therefore, brothers, until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, being patient about it, until it receives the early and the late rains. You also, be patient. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand. Do not grumble against one another, brothers, so that you may not be judged; behold, the Judge is standing at the door. 10 As an example of suffering and patience, brothers, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. 11 Behold, we consider those blessed who remained steadfast. You have heard of the steadfastness of Job, and you have seen the purpose of the Lord, how the Lord is compassionate and merciful. 12 But above all, my brothers, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or by any other oath, but let your “yes” be yes and your “no” be no, so that you may not fall under condemnation.                                                         James 5:7-12    ESV

3 Pictures of Patience to encourage us:

1. The Farmer (5:7-9)

2. The Prophets (5:10-11a)

3. Job (5:11b)

Notes:

Game Plan This Week:

1st Down:
-         Review the sermon
o   What were the main points?
o   What points were most meaningful to you?

2nd Down:
-         Study/discuss the text
o   From James 4:13-14, what evidence should be seen in our schedule of our faith in God?
o   How could someone look at our calendar or schedule and determine that we are an atheist? Explain your reasoning.

3rd Down:
-         Break into smaller groups and discuss these items:
o   How does having a firm grasp of God’s coming justice impact our view of suffering now?
o   Why is it so hard to think like this? Why is it liberating to think like this?
o   How will you think and live differently today if you remember that the “Judge” is at the door?

4th Down:
-         This week make a commitment to sit down often with God and discuss how you can live out this passage.
o   Contemplate on this question: What things am I trying to control that is out of my control?
o  What things in my life do I need to submit to God’s mighty hand?
o  How do you need to pray for God’s wisdom today?
o  Ask God who are the three people that are not followers of Jesus that you need to begin praying for.
