Justice is a Form
of Welcome
Countless signs by busy streets
and on parish websites proclaim
The Episcopal Church Welcomes You.
For people of color, that has often been a welcome with the caveat of fitting into a largely white culture.
At our 2021 diocesan convention, we committed to mitigating that caveat so that our siblings of every ancestry and race can experience the fullness of the Episcopal Church’s WELCOME.
We are about to begin a Racial Justice Audit. The process will take about two years to complete. In 2023, we will begin with surveys and interviews of those involved in diocesan governing bodies and committees. In 2024, we will expand to deaneries and parishes. At the end, the findings will be assembled into a report that will help us to make meaningful shifts in the way we amend our shortcomings and build plans for a more inclusive and diverse future as a diocese and as worshiping communities sharing the gospel and making disciples in Northern California.
A general timeline for the audit is listed on the diocesan website here.

Last Sunday after Epiphany
Luke 9:28-36 [37-43a].
It was a brilliant stroke for the lectionary revisers to place the story of the Transfiguration of Jesus on the Sunday before Lent. From then on, it is down hill for Jesus until he suffers death on a cross. As for Luke’s presentation of the Transfiguration, one word, unique to Luke’s gospel narrative, is very striking.
In the NRSV translation that word is departure (Luke 9:31). In the original Greek this one word is Exodus. At once any Bible reader will recall the great story of God’s deliverance of Israel from bondage in Egypt found in the book of Exodus. With this one word, Luke echoes a whole story, and indicates that the life, death, and Resurrection of Jesus is God’s new exodus. Through Jesus the Messiah God has delivered his people from bondage to sin and death.
Another striking feature of Luke’s story of the Transfiguration is one that he shares with Matthew and Luke. (There is no Transfiguration in John). This is the command from the heavenly voice, Listen to him. (Luke 9:35). The retelling of the story of God and his people with Jesus at the center issues in this practical command. May this Lent be for us a special time of listening to the Lord Jesus.
