Become Iowa's AVMA HOD Alternate Delegate

The AVMA House of Delegates (HOD) is composed of members representing 70 state, territorial, and allied veterinary medical groups– a delegate and an alternate delegate from each organization. The HOD sets association policies and elects the seven-member House Advisory Committee, which makes recommendations to both the House and the Board of Directors. The House of Delegates meets twice a year: each summer at AVMA Convention and each winter at the Veterinary Leadership Conference.

Iowa will have an opening later this year in the AVMA House of Delegates (HOD) as the current Alternate Delegate, Dr. Molly Lee will move to the Delegate position. Delegate and Alternate Delegate are each four-year terms, so a new Alternate Delegate would be representing Iowa for eight years.

If you are interested in the Iowa Alternate Delegate Position or have questions, please contact Dr. Randy Wheeler at rwheeler@iowavma.org or 515-965-9237 by March 30.

Podcasts on Swine Manure Available

Manure management is a crucial aspect of swine production. Being proactive and taking steps to address manure foaming is critical for the safety of livestock and farm workers.

Ashley Englin, swine extension specialist at Iowa State University, recently wrote an article highlighting key safety practices and methods for reducing foam. “Pit Foaming in Swine Barns: Fire Risk and Practical Solutions” is based on research from the Iowa Manure Management Action Group at Iowa State University and can be accessed at ipic.iastate.edu.

Daniel Andersen, associate professor and extension specialist at Iowa State University, focuses his research on manure management and water quality. Andersen hosts a podcast, “Talkin’ Crap,” which features interviews with experts in manure science, technology, and management practices.

The following podcast episodes are free to listeners and provide specific information on manure foam management and safety: Foaming at the Pit: Causes, Consequences, and What We’ve Learned and Harvest Hazards: Manure Management and Farm Safety.

For additional guidance, producers can contact their regional swine extension specialist.
