From Our Pastors
Where Thinking Starts

Carl Sagan was famous for the opening lines in his highly acclaimed early 1980s scientistic video series, Cosmos . With stirring, almost worshipful, music in the background and dramatic scenes of ocean waves pounding majestic cliffs under crystal blue skies, Sagan himself, the urbane and erudite ambassador for Philosophical Naturalism, strolls the cliffs in his turtleneck and sport coat soberly intoning, “the universe is all there is, ever was, or ever will be.” This confident philosophical statement is, of course, not true, never has been true, and never will be true. In fact, even as Sagan and his friends were filming their paean to eternal materialism, their scientific brethren were in the process of confirming the growing consensus that the universe did indeed come into being in a very brief moment in the distant past, which implies strongly that it will be extinguished at some time in the distant future. The supposed eternality of the universe seems to have been impressively overstated.

But such are the vagaries of science when it strays into the field of philosophy. It is one thing to study the natural world, but quite another to make confident assertions regarding its origins and its destiny. Why do Philosophical Naturalist scientists insist on offering speculative opinions on the origins and destiny of our world? Probably because these are the biggest questions facing mankind. Who can blame people for wondering and offering opinions on why there is something rather than nothing, where all these things are going, the meaning of life, and what constitutes moral reality? All people, even atheist scientists (not all scientists are atheists by the way), are philosophers, or theologians, or both. But the disciplines do not automatically overlap. Science is a wonderful thing, but it does not answer any of the biggest questions of life. Measuring gravity or energy does not offer any wisdom as to how these things came into existence, or even what they are. Neither do our very accurate and impressive measurements give us the slightest hint as to why they (or we for that matter) exist.

If anything at all exists, something or some One, must have always existed. Think about it. If there ever was a time when there was really nothing, how could there be anything today? And if there is an Ultimate Essence, then it is either personal or impersonal. If it is impersonal (dead energy, stuff) how did it become… us ? Consciousness, mind, personality, people, family, culture, beauty, music, love, real life. Hot cosmic rocks and the “law of gravity” could not and did not produce these. How did inanimate stuff become the sort of life capable of wondering where it came from? It makes much more sense if the Ultimate is Personal and created the stuff for good reasons. This is precisely what the Bible teaches when it speaks of beginnings:

In the beginning God created everything… Gen.1

In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God…he created everything…John 1

And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us and we clearly saw his glory…John 1:14

We often hear confidence in God ridiculed by those who think that they themselves are cosmic accidents. One wonders how they arrived at the conclusion that He does not exist, given the presupposition that their own minds are accidents. Would you fly in a plane that was assembled by accident?

Here is a suggestion for clear thinking: Start with God and not Stuff. Prov.1:7

Just a Thought,

Pastor Rick
