------ Led by the mercy of God we journey together this season of Lent.
This past week the daily Scriptures have included stories of the very unwilling prophet Jonah. God’s persistence was able to work with and through Jonah’s resistance. Lori Stanley is the Executive Director of Loyola Institute for Spirituality in Orange, CA and she wrote the following reflection on the Scripture. “When it’s too hard to be patient, it’s easy to demand signs from God. While anxiously waiting, our ears are often plugged with self-doubt and our backs turned away from God’s open arms. It’s no wonder we look for an outward sign. Oftentimes we expect sensational events to confirm what we have already planned for our lives. No matter our plans, God will be sure to meet us wherever we are through messages and messengers we’d never consider as signs. We mustn’t forget to look for God in all things. We must remember that wherever God guides, God provides. Our Creator lovingly awaits to usher us into new opportunities beyond what we could ever imagine for ourselves. Step out in faith without fear of the future. Be comforted in knowing that fear does not come from God and that love casts out all fear.”
May each of us make sure that we in our Lenten days, in our prayer fasting and almsgiving we are following God’s lead in our lives. In our almsgiving, fasting and prayer, being stretched beyond our all too familiar comfort zones may we trust and give thanks for the truth in our lives, “wherever God guides, God provides.”
The beautiful prayer for Spiritual Communion has been the bedrock of many people’s reception of communion this past year. Desiring to receive the Lord in the Eucharist guides people in their relationship with Christ and their daily lived faith. May this prayer and its effects continue to support those in our community who are not able to gather with us in person at Mass.
An Act of Spiritual Communion (in lieu of receiving the Blessed Sacrament) My Jesus, I believe that You are truly present in the Most Blessed Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to possess You within my soul. Since I am unable to receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as being already there and unite myself wholly to You; never permit me to be separated from You. Amen. This translation of the Act of Spiritual Communion was attributed to St. Alphonsus Liguori the founder of the Redemptorists.
-------Responding to our parishioners and serving them these Lenten days we will be offering the gift of the Eucharist on the last Sunday of the month. “Drive in Communion” will be offered this Sunday, February 28, the second Sunday of Lent in the Oakwood Lot following the 12:00 Noon Mass. Special thanks to members of the Knights of Columbus for assisting us and directing traffic for those parishioners who come to be nourished and receive communion in this Lenten season.
-------During Lent we will be using a new Penitential Rite at all of the Masses. The following is the Penitential Rite we have been using in Lent at St. Mary’s
Priest: Have mercy on us, O Lord.
People: For we have sinned against you.
Priest: Show us, O Lord, your mercy.
People: And grant us your salvation.
Priest: May almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life.
People: Amen.
-------This year if you would like, you can purchase homemade soup lovingly made by the local “Soup Fairy” aka from Lia Landis soup specialist and longtime parishioner. A 1/2 Gallon of soup (in 2 separate quart containers) is available for $20.00. The soup is delivered to people in Lake Forest and Lake Bluff. Each week there will be a different soup offered for purchase. The current schedule is as follows: March 5, 2021 - Minestrone w/ Cheese Stuffed Tortellini and on Friday, March 12, 2021 - Tuscan Bean and Kale. You could order enough for you and your family – maybe even share some with social distancing with a neighbor. You could enjoy the simple dinner during Lent and then stream our praying of the stations and or join us at St. Mary’s at 7:00 PM on Friday evenings.
The deadline to order soup for the following Friday is by Tuesday at 12:00 Noon of that week. Once you place an order through my Administrative Assistant at the Parish Office (lardell@churchofstmary.org), you will receive a confirmation email with details regarding payment. We may not be able to come together in the school cafeteria this year at the hospitality of the Knights of Columbus but we can enjoy a simple meal of soup united in “spirit” with one another on Fridays of Lent. You are invited to attend at 7:00 PM or stream the Stations of the Cross through the Church of St. Mary website.

--------- Last Sunday I was at Holy Name Cathedral for the Rite of Election. With me was Melissa Delia who will be receiving the Sacraments of Initiation at St. Mary’s at the Easter Vigil, her sponsor and godparent Anne Doppenberg and Lore Nugent our Pastoral Associate. When entering the Cathedral we were greeted with signs, similar to the posters we have here at St. Mary’s. When entering the Cathedral, people are instructed….Please experience the peace and serenity of this sacred space with reverence. We invite you not only to enjoy our beautiful Cathedral, but to nurture it as well. In reverence to the Lord for the courtesy of other worshippers, PLEASE: NO photography during the worship service. Please turn off or silence your cell phones. Do not leave bags or items unattended. No sleeping in the pews. Do not enter the sanctuary. Please wear a mask. NO FOOD – NO HATS – Thank you!
Also, at the Cathedral they had stickers on the back of the pews with an image of a bar code available for people to scan and make an electronic donation from their pew. I would not attempt that here for fear of damaging the pews as well as in gratitude for the generosity of stewardship, tithing and support parishioners are offering to the Church of St. Mary these days of pandemic. Thanks for the active support given to your parish in the offertory collections. Parish Mission envelopes were included in the packet of envelopes mailed to parishioners. With COVID these days, we will not be having a 2021 Lenten Parish Mission. Any money received in the Parish Mission Envelopes will be donated to Catholic Relief Services towards feeding the hungry. Thanks for your support of the parish.
-------Lenten Rice Bowl packets are available for your prayer, reflection and almsgiving. Included with the packets are prayers that I will use in my article for the season of Lent.
God of Mercy, You call us to recognize you in our sisters and brothers, and to care for those most in need – for whatever you do for the least of these you do for me. This Lent, ignite your love in us so that through our prayers, fasting and almsgiving we may support all who experience hunger in body, heat and spirit. AMEN.
May the mercy of God direct our lives these Lenten days.

GENERAL GUIDELINES
Below are a few guidelines for being in the Church. There are numerous signs around the exterior and interior of the Church to help facilitate these new patterns. Due to the limited capacity, number of parishioners and our reduced Mass schedule, we ask that you sign up for a weekend Mass every other week and one weekday Mass to allow others to be able to pray in the Church and celebrate Mass in person. If the day before, there are still open slots, you may sign up.
-
Church Entrance: The south door, near the elevator, is the only entrance into the Church. Please form a line along the exterior south wall of the Church and a volunteer greeter will let you in.
-
Arrive On Time: South Entrance doors will open 15 minutes prior to the start of Mass and it is strongly encouraged you arrive by the time the doors open as time is needed to Greet visitors and allow Ushers to seat you.
-
Entrance Doors Close: South Entrance doors will close at the start of Mass to allow volunteers to attend Mass. Thank you for allowing yourself time to arrive.
-
Volunteers: Parish volunteers will be on site to help direct and guide all of us as we begin to open and re-enter the Church.
-
Masks/Face Covering: Mask or face coverings are required to be worn by all individuals at all times while in the Church building.
-
Hand Sanitizer: Sanitize your hands as you enter the Church building.
-
Social Distance: Maintain proper social distancing of 6 feet apart, unless you are with somebody who lives in the same household as you. There are floor markings to help facilitate this.
-
100 Persons Maximum: A maximum of 100 individuals (excluding the priest and other ministers) are allowed in the Church at one time. In inclement weather, personal vehicles would be a necessary shelter while waiting.
-
Church Exit: The north doors onto the main plaza will be the only exit from the Church (unless you require use of the elevator).
-
Church East Entrance - Emergency Exit Only: Please do not use the East doors onto the stairways for either entering or exiting.
-
Surface Sanitizing: All surfaces touched by persons are sanitized prior to the next opening of the Church.
-
Restrooms Unavailable: For the safety of all, the restrooms will not be available, unless it's an emergency.
-
Registration Required: Registration is required through SignUp Genius for Public Mass, Adoration, Baptisms, Weddings and Funerals. 85 slots will be available online and 15 slots will be available by calling the office for those who do not have access to technology.
-
SignUp Availability: SignUps for the next week's schedule will be available through SignUp Genius after 9:00am on Friday's. Registration is required for Public Mass & Prayer, Adoration, Weddings, Funerals and Baptisms. If you need assistance, please contact the Parish Center Office during normal business hours at receptionist@churchofstmary.org or call 847-234-0205. Leave a message and they will call you back.
VOLUNTEERS
Volunteer Tasks:
- Greeters will assist in managing the flow of congregants as they enter the church, participate in the liturgy/sacrament, and exit the church.
- Team members will combine some of the functions of an usher, such as directing participants to appropriate seating/waiting areas, but will include additional responsibilities, including, but not limited to, making sure attendees use hand sanitizer upon entering, are wearing a mask, and are reminded not to enter if ill.
- Given the circumstances, greeters will need to be tactful and firm paying careful attention to all people on-site. To support parish greeter teams, rudimentary training tips on handling difficult situations will be provided.
- Volunteers will ensure that: all supplies needed for each sacramental celebration/gathering are ready for use, entrances and exits are marked and propped physically open prior to attendees' arrival/departure, and windows are opened.
- Volunteers will help maintain and sanitize essential and trafficked areas of the church after the church has been used. Masks and gloves will be provided, if necessary, in addition to approved cleaning/disinfecting supplies.
May God grant you peace and comfort in this time.

February 28, 2021: Gospel Reflection for Second Sunday of Lent
|
|
Just as the gospel for the first week of Lent always features Jesus being tempted in the desert so the second week features the Transfiguration of Jesus on the mountain top. Let us take a step back and look at the first reading though. The account of God testing Abraham’s faith marks an important bifurcation of faith traditions. Depending on which translation of the Old Testament you have you will read that God asks Abraham to take his “first son” or his “only son”. Abraham’s first born son is named Ishmael from Sarah’s handmaid Hagar. Sarah was well beyond child bearing age and with the promise that God gave Abraham that his descendants would be as numerous as the stars in the sky, Sarah asked Hagar to lay with Abraham in order to fulfill prophecy. Hagar gives birth to Ishmael and it comes to be that Sarah is also with child, who will be Isaac. Now here comes the quandary. Technically Ishmael is the first born son, however legally he is of no consequence since he was not born of Abraham’s legal wife. Isaac, although born second, IS born of Abraham’s legal wife Sarah. Therefore in order to squelch any legal issues in the future, Hagar & Ishmael are sent away. Thus a branch is created between Israel & Islam, both claiming it was their son who was taken to the altar for sacrifice.
However the heart of this story is really just between God and Abraham. God has already asked Abraham to have enough faith to leave his home in Ur (modern day Iraq) and go to a place God will tell him. Abraham has such faith that he does go to an unknown place, wandering till God tells him to stay and make roots. God has also promised to make Abraham’s descendants as numerous as the stars. Now God asks Abraham to sacrifice his son, the son that is to set the course for all future descendants. God has given Abraham so much and yet wants to see if Abraham is willing to give it all back. God sees Abraham’s utter faithfulness and changes course allowing for a ram to be sacrificed instead.
Now we turn to the gospel. Just prior to Sunday’s reading Jesus had asked the disciples who people think Jesus is. They responded that some people think Jesus is Elijah, John the Baptist or a prophet. Jesus then asks the disciples who do they think Jesus is? Peter proudly says that Jesus is the Messiah. Peter is correct yet we see in Sunday’s gospel, what Peter thinks the Messiah will act like is different from what Jesus & God know to be true.
Jesus takes his three closest disciples up a mountain. Red exclamation points should be going off in our heads at this point! Anytime a mountain is mentioned we know that it means there will be an encounter with the divine. It was thought that the higher up we go, say to a mountain top, the closer we are to God. While they are up there, Jesus is transformed before the disciples and his clothes become whiter than anything they’ve ever seen before! In scripture a person's clothing can be seen as an external reflection of their internal spirituality. Since Jesus is one with God, his exterior is white, the color of purity. Even more so, Moses and Elijah appear with Jesus and are in conversation. We are never told what they are discussing but that is not the point. We see that Moses (representing religious law) and Elijah (representing the Prophets) with Jesus showing that Jesus is the fulfillment of the law and prophecy.
Whereas Peter was insightful enough to understand that Jesus is the Messiah he doesn’t have full understanding of what that means. We see that when he excitedly puts forth that they should put up three tents, one each for Moses, Elijah and Jesus. Essentially sticking his foot in his mouth! A cloud (God) descends and says “This is my beloved son. Listen to him.” A firm way of stopping Peter in his tracks.
We are not meant to stay on the mountain top. We have these fleeting, deeply profound experiences so that they rejuvenate us and ignite the flame of the Holy Spirit so that we may take that renewed passion for God and God’s mission down into the everyday-ness of our lives. We live it out so that others see us with that spark of the Holy Spirit and they too are drawn to it and want to learn more! We are still at the beginning of our Lenten journey; reflect upon past mountain top experiences you’ve had and how you can take that spark, that feeling and allow it to help you on your Lenten journey this season.

“’Here I am!’ he answered.”
GENESIS 22:11
It is easy to say, “Here I am, Lord,” when we are kneeling in church. But how easy is it to say “Here I am, Lord,” when a neighbor needs our help, when we are invited to join a parish ministry, or when we are asked to provide financial support? Oftentimes we are called when it’s not convenient for us. Discipleship is not always easy, most of the time it will make us uncomfortable and vulnerable.
