Local Fire and Rescue Organizations Seeking  Volunteer Firefighters and Medics

Both the Gloucester Volunteer Fire and Rescue and Rescue Squad, Inc. (GVFRS) and Abingdon Volunteer Fire and Rescue Squad (AVFRS) are in need of volunteers to effectively serve the needs of the community.

Both organizations report that the number of new recruits for both medics and firefighters have dwindled over the past several years, placing an extreme burden on the volunteers that continue to actively serve.

There are general requirements to join each department.

GVFRS requirements include being 18 years old, having no criminal record, possessing a clean driving record, and having a desire to help the community. The organization offers a Junior EMS and Fire Cadet Program for those who are 16-18 years old. To learn more about joining GVFRS, visit gvfrs.org/join or call Station #1 at 804-693-2148. AVFRS offers several membership categories. There is an application page on the company’s website, www.avfr.com/join-the-company, or by calling 804-642-2360.

“Our volunteer fire and rescue squads are extremely vital to the well-being of our community,” said Gloucester’s County Administrator, Carol Steele. “The dedicated volunteers of both organizations also save our taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars each year.”

Important Daffodil Festival Deadlines Announced !

The 2023 Gloucester Daffodil Festival is scheduled for April 1-2 and will center around the theme, “Let’s Jazz it Up, the Trumpets are Blooming.” Gloucester’s Parks, Recreation, & Tourism Department will begin accepting applications Feb. 1 for the 2023 Daffodil Festival Parade. Meanwhile, the deadline to submit applications for Little Miss Daffodil and the Annual Scholarship is Feb. 10, 2023.

Next year’s festival is set to feature live entertainment that will be loved by all ages. The Amazing Mutt Show will also return for the 2023 event, among many other favorites.

“We appreciate all of our sponsors who continue to support the festival and welcome new sponsors,” said Debbie Wesolowski, festival coordinator. “We could not do it without you!”

The Daffodil Festival Queen represents the Daffodil Festival and Gloucester County at several events during the year. The Queen’s program is open to females in Gloucester County, ages 16-19 years old. When the Daffodil Festival Queen fulfills her responsibilities, she may be eligible to receive a $1,000 scholarship to the education institution of her choice. For younger ladies, the Little Miss Daffodil program is open to those ages 8-10 years old.

The Daffodil Festival offers one four-year renewable $1,000 scholarship each year. The scholarship is designed to assist Gloucester County graduating seniors who are planning to attend college, community college or trade school.
