From The Pastor's Desk...
Greetings in the name of our Lord!
When is the last time you went on a trip? Before Covid, when is the last time you *didn't* go on a trip? For me, my last trip was the weekend of moving to New Jersey; the last time I went 4 months without some highway or plane journey, I was probably 10 years old! Yet another way we are in a strange time.
This Lent, we are taking a journey - a spiritual one. The image of journeying will go with us throughout Lent:
- from driving to Church for ashes on February 17
- to journeying with Jesus to Jerusalem through the readings we will share in Sunday worship
- with our "sackcloth" crosses that we will revisit each day of Lent
- at our midweek devotionals that you can find on our YouTube page
- through our youth Lenten calendars and adult Lenten booklets
We will seek to make resources available to you for your Lenten journey. If you would like a Lenten devotional booklet, please call or email the Church office to reserve one; you can also purchase your own via Nooks or Kindles. The links are provide below. Calendars will be mailed to youth. Sackcloth crosses will be distributed on Ash Wednesday as well as being available outside the Church doors starting Monday, February 8th.
Blessings on you during your Lenten journey!
Peace,
Pastor Wendolyn
" Many people mistake our work for our vocation. Our vocation is the love of Jesus." - Mother Theresa
As of Wednesday, February 10th, Pastor Wendolyn will be vaccinated and can make home visits! Please find your way into her schedule book either by calling or texting her at 609-286-4533 or emailing her. Daytime, evenings, and weekends are all available, as are phone conversations or set ZOOM times. There doesn't have to be a special reason to be visited by your pastor - it is simply a blessing to be together!
Pastor's Contact Information:
-Cell phone: 609-286-4533 - available 24/7 though I do not answer while driving or visiting.
-Instagram: Wendofish - younger folks rely on this app, so please encourage them to connect with me here!

Pocket Ministries Make
King Cakes
Recently, some of our Pocket Ministry groups participated in the Epiphany tradition of making King Cakes.
Traditionally, a small porcelain or plastic baby, symbolizing Jesus, is hidden in the king cake. Finding it, when eating the cake, is a way for people to celebrate their Christian faith. During the ancient Roman festival of Saturnalia, there was a tradition, similar to today's, where a bean was hidden in a galette. The person finding the bean in their serving of the dessert, was chosen the "king of the day". In the Middle Ages, this activity became associated with Epiphany. The king cake takes its name from the Biblical Magi. In Western Christian tradition, Epiphany celebrates the visit of the Magi to the Christ Child.
Below are some of the king cakes made by the Pocket Ministry groups and a link to a recipe if you want to bake one and join in celebrating the baby Jesus.

The Lenten Season
Lent is a time during the church calendar when we practice spiritual disciplines. Lent begins Ash Wednesday and continues for 40 days. This Lenten Season, each youth will receive a Lent-stagram calendar and burlap cross to journey through Lent with. We encourage all youth to check our instagram (@lolyouth4) to see our daily posts and participate in the daily activities.
This year, our younger children and families are going to go through Lent together using a calendar. We will read the Bible and do activities to help us remember what Jesus did for us. We encourage you to color Flat Jesus and bring him with you to the events listed on his back so we can see where Jesus has gone with you.

Quilt Ministry News:
A Message From Gloria Brosious
Recently, Pastor asked me to write a follow-up report to all about what happened to the shipment Lutheran World Relief (LWR) quilts that were in the warehouse explosion in Lebanon this past August. The report is below:
A shipment of LWR quilts and kits arrived in the port of Beirut just six days before a deadly explosion on August 4, 2020. The initial thought was that the three containers full of quilts and kits were lost in the explosion. News of this tragedy moved many Lutherans just like you to respond with overwhelming support and determination to replace what was lost. Then, one month after the initial report, LWR received divine news that, against all odds, the containers were intact! Miraculously, the containers' seals were not even broken, leaving every quilt and kit with no chemical contamination. Out of enormous despair and loss, these precious gifts of compassion and kindness remained unharmed, ready to be shared with more than 24,000 neighbors across Lebanon. Indeed, those precious gifts have been distributed and brought much joy to those who received them.
********
Our Quilting Ministry Continues:
Quilt kits, batting, and backings are available to all who would like to join in making quilts for Lutheran World Relief. Please contact Gloria Brosious by email if you have any questions or wish to receive the materials to make a quilt. A link to her email is below.

Continuing Your Contributions
Your continuing financial support is essential to maintain the Ministries of Lord Of Life. Your envelopes can be mailed to the church (1 Winchester Court, Tabernacle, NJ 08088) and Simply Giving remains in place.
Offerings can also be made via a secure website and cell phone app. More information about these ways to contribute can be found on the church's website. The link is below.
Despite these troubling COVID-19 times, the work of the church is going on. Pastor Wendolyn and our staff are actively engaged, and the need to pay bills and the mortgage continue. Prayerfully consider continuing with your regular contributions.

Other Ways To Financially Support Lord Of Life
As we are still in the beginning of 2021, the editors thought that referring you to an article that appeared in the LifeLines issue of July 3, 2020 would be helpful to remind everyone that there are some ways additional to the traditional use of church envelopes to generate contributions to our Lord Of Life ministries during this year.
The article spoke of the 4 items pictured above: The Cares Act, using an IRA distribution as a direct contribution to the church, shopping on Amazon Smile and designating Lord Of Life as your charity, and, for Thrivent Members, designating any "Choice Dollars," you might have, to be given to Lord Of Life. There are details in the article which include instructions as to how to sign up of Amazon Smile and Thrivent Choice Dollars. Use the link below to access the article in the July 3rd LifeLines.
********
Two More To Consider:
Support from Thrivent is available for some our ministries at Lord Of Life. An example would be the Quilting Ministry for which Thrivent has provided funds to purchase quilt batting, backing, and thread. This ministry is involved with what Thrivent calls a "making a difference in your community with your community" project and has formed a Thrivent Action Team. Your ministry might also be able to secure a donation from Thrivent for its work. At least one member of your ministry must be a Thrivent member to apply.
To learn more about the Thrivent Action Teams, click on the link below.
Stock Donations
Some of our congregation members donate stock holdings to Lord Of Life. Our church has established an account with Merrill Lynch which facilitates the process of a stock transfer. You may qualify for a tax benefit when donating stock. Speak with your financial advisor to learn more.

Our Ending Hymn:
Our ELW hymn, #584, was selected as one of the top 10 hymns in 2019 by the BBC. It is one of several hymns written by the St. Louis Jesuits composer Daniel Schutte. This rendition was arranged by Ovid Young and is sung by the Luther College Cathedral Choir. Enjoy!
Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, "Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?" And I said, "Here am I; send me!"
Isaiah 6:8 NRSV
