 |  | At the Broward Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO), we always look at ways to improve safety on our roadways and beyond because we believe safe communities contribute significantly to an improved quality of life for those who live, work, and play in Broward County. To that end, we recently held initial meetings with Broward County officials to shape the Broward Regional Comprehensive Safety Action Plan (BSAP). As key stakeholders in regional development, we've secured a generous $5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) under the Safe Streets and Roads for All initiative. This funding has been specifically earmarked for developing an all-inclusive Safety Action Plan tailored for Broward County. We've enlisted the help of two essential committees, each playing vital roles in conceiving and carrying out the Safety Action Plan. The Oversight Committee, tasked with overseeing and managing the plan's execution, is intended to guarantee smooth and continual progress. The Oversight Committee meets every quarter. The Technical Working Group is responsible for carrying out safety and equity analyses, pondering potential alternatives, proposing project and policy recommendations, and defining strategic objectives to dramatically decrease the number of fatalities and serious injuries resulting from road accidents. To maintain effective communication, this group is scheduled to meet monthly.

On January 30, 2024, the Technical Working Group convened to advance the dialogue. The Oversight Committee conducted its inaugural meeting for the year on February 1, 2024. Accompanying these meetings, we hosted an educational session as part of the Safe Streets for All and Vision Zero initiatives on January 31, 2024, to ensure shared understanding and knowledge among participants. We are now entering a critical phase for the Safety Action Plan, ready to assess its development and effectiveness. Over the next 18 months, the committee will meet to discuss the plan's progress. The deadline for the plan's completion is June 2025. This strategy will ensure that safer communities become a reality in Broward County, paving the way for a prosperous future for all. | |

In honor of Black History Month, we’re shining a light on one of the esteemed members of our Board of Directors, Dr. Kicia Daniel, a City of Tamarac commissioner representing District 4. Commissioner Daniel’s passion, commitment, and influence serve as an inspiration for all. With a decade-long residence in Tamarac, Commissioner Daniel's dedication to public service is inspiring. Over the last thirty years, she has worn the hats of advocate, missionary, and educator, making a lasting impact in every role. In her current capacity as a successful school principal within Broward County Public Schools, where she has proudly served for 23 years, Commissioner Daniel’s transformative leadership skills have significantly uplifted educational outcomes. She has shown that effective leadership can impact a school’s performance, taking an educational institution from ranking among the lowest 300 in the State of Florida to performing above average in just one year. Her hard work has not gone unnoticed. She won the Exceeding Expectation Award in 2019 and 2020 and has received commendations for her leadership skills from Harvard University and the Florida Department of Education. Equally impressive is Commissioner Daniel's commitment to her personal growth. She is a proud alum of Florida A&M University and holds a Master's and Doctor of Education in Leadership from Nova Southeastern University. Broward MPO Launches Transportation Academy | |
The inaugural class of the Broward MPO’s Transportation Academy officially kicked off on Thursday, February 1, 2024. The academy was created to help local leaders champion community investments in transportation and navigate the process of bringing ideas to life. Over five sessions, our transportation champions will enhance their foundational knowledge of transportation planning and infrastructure development, improving transportation connectivity in their community. Our first cohort consisted of eleven Broward MPO Board members. In the first class, they participated in lectures presented by MPO staff and industry experts and engaged in interactive activities. We are excited to see our champions expand their knowledge over the next four sessions. The Transportation Academy will be open in the future to all who want to become a transportation champion of their community! Keep an eye out for your opportunity. | |

Let’s Go Biking in Miramar
| The Broward MPO and our partners in the City of Miramar invite you to save the date for this year’s Let’s Go Biking! The event will be held at the Miramar Regional Park on Saturday, March 16, 2024. Since 2014, the Broward MPO has organized Let’s Go Biking! Events to promote the use of Broward’s bicycle facilities, bicycle safety, and the health benefits of active transportation. The Broward MPO and the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) conducted a comprehensive multimodal study along State Road A1A. The study's objective was to identify potential improvements for infrastructure and services, focusing on resilience and green street principles. Feedback and input from local governments and community outreach efforts played a key role in shaping the study. An open house event was held by the MPO for the cities along the A1A corridor on January 23, 2024, presenting an opportunity for the stakeholders to evaluate the final concepts and recommendations. Following this, the study is expected to be presented to the MPO's Technical and Citizens Advisory Committees in February, and later, to the MPO Board in March. A significant effort has been made by the MPO to address climate change and resiliency along Hollywood Boulevard. This is demonstrated through the initiation of a study applying our Transportation Resiliency Framework to the corridor stretching from Young Circle to the Intracoastal Bridge. After being approved by the MPO Board in February 2023, it's anticipated to be completed by summer 2024. Key collaborations with the City of Hollywood, FDOT, and Broward County have been critical to the project’s success.
Two public meetings for this project were organized to garner public opinion and consensus on the study's approach. The first of these meetings was an introductory session held on September 13, 2023, with the aim of familiarizing the project team with the study's planning aspects. The second meeting was held on January 25, 2024, where three preliminary alternatives for addressing the Boulevard's vulnerabilities were presented. Attendees were encouraged to participate in discussions and rank these alternatives. Following refinement based on the feedback received, a final meeting will be arranged for Spring 2024. Transportation Master Plan Community Meetings
| On January 29 and January 30, 2024, the Broward MPO hosted two community meetings for the Wilton Manors Transportation Master Plan. Residents, business owners, and other stakeholders learned about and provided input on the recommended improvements for sidewalks, bike paths, and roadways. This is the second citywide Transportation Master Plan developed with technical assistance from the MPO City Services staff. The Plan focuses on six critical roadways for multimodal improvements for the residents of Wilton Manors: Powerline Road, Andrews Avenue, NE 26th Street, Dixie Highway, NE 24th Street, and NE 21st Court.
