The Ballad of Brock Purdy

To the theme from the Beverly Hillbillies

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NwzaxUF0k18

Come and listen to my story of a man named Brock

The last man drafted but we knew he was a jock

When he got into the lineup all the Niners did was win

But when he hurt his elbow there was no one to go in.

At quarterback that is.

Throw the ball. Score some points. Super Bowl.

It's wait 'til next year, y'hear?

Robert A. Moselle, Esq.

Get Rid of Shanahan

Strangely, I have not read, or heard anyone explain why, when Brock Purdy's arm was so badly damaged and he was in such intense pain that he couldn't throw more than five yards, Shanahan kept "The Franchise" in the game.

He gambled with Purdy's career, even after the game was, for all practical purposes lost, when he kept him in to hand off the ball or run and risk further damage.

McCaffery, post-game, said there had been discussions about himself, or others, as a "Plan B" if both Brock and Josh Johnson were injured. Even a "Plan C" would have been better than to expose Purdy to unknown risks to his career when the game was, for all practical purposes, lost. What kind of coach does that?

The Eagles knew he was unable to throw. Fortunately, the O-Line protected him from the sicko Eagles who knew he was hurt and unable to throw, long after the outcome was no longer in doubt. Shanahan must go!

San Francisco 49ers Redux

If Only...

by Dave Newhouse

It’s a shame the San Francisco 49ers came up short of the Super Bowl, because the perfect title of their Cinderella season no longer

fits: Relevant.

Brock Purdy’s singular rookie ascension — Mr. Irrelevant, the last player taken in the 2022 draft, the only such pick to ever become an NFL starter — came up short, thus no Hollywood movie or best-selling book, yet still remarkably Relevant.

So how do the 49ers now proceed, because their quarterback situation still seems murky? Purdy was their third starting quarterback, yet they astonishingly reached the NFC title game, where Purdy and fourth quarterback Josh Johnson were both sidelined by the physical Eagles in frenzied Philadelphia.

Purdy’s injury, which might require surgery to his passing arm, could jeopardize his availability in 2023. Thus the 49ers are contemplating what’s next, since they’ve made it clear they are parting company with Jimmy Garoppolo, who absorbed considerable abuse in San Francisco, yet handled it with aplomb, normally responding with a smile. But don’t forget: He produced a 40-17 record as a starter and post-season factor.

Garoppolo is about to become a free agent, but I have a recommendation to satisfy his leaving: A blockbuster trade with Green Bay. The 49ers blew it when they failed to draft Aaron Rodgers — they took Alex Smith with the No. 1 overall pick — but they have a chance to rectify that mistake.

So here goes: Trade Garoppolo to the Packers quickly, and throw in Deebo Samuels and Fred Warner as added fodder to get Rodgers. Yes, they’d be giving up a lot, but wouldn’t you to get one of the greatest quarterbacks of all-time, and the NFL’s most accurate thrower ever? Rodgers, who’s open to leaving Green Bay, would be coming home (Chico) and giving the 49ers the rejuvenation to shake up themselves, and the league, next season.

Might Aaron Rodgers be the 49ers savior?

The 49ers have enough firepower to overcome losing two great players in offensive spark plug Samuels and linebacker standout Warner. But they need a great quarterback, and Rodgers, just short of 40, would give them that important edge. If Tom Brady could play to 45, Rodgers could too.

The 49ers would be fearsome with Rodgers, quarterbacking's true Mr. Relevant, thereby insuring a successful start to their 2023 season, unlike this past season, a slow start which cost the Niners home field advantage in the NFC title game. Make Philadelphia or whomever come to Santa Clara next winter.

If the 49ers dangle whom to play at quarterback, Trey Lance or Purdy, they could deep six their playoff hopes. With Rodgers, they can envision the Super Bowl.

That aside, there remains in the disappointed minds of The Faithful, a 49ers roughing-the-punter penalty that should not have been called or an Eagles reception that should have been disallowed. But, truthfully, either play wouldn’t have changed the outcome of the 31-7 loss.

But here is something to contemplate: Why didn’t the 49ers receive the opening kickoff instead of deferring to the second half? They were playing in a hostile environment — Philadelphia’s crazed fans egged the 49ers bus upon its stadium arrival — so why give the home team first shot at scoring? And the Eagles, of course, scored first. By the second half kickoff, the quarterback-starved 49ers were done.

Not only the 49ers, but every NFL team, it seems, defers after winning the opening coin toss. That may not make a difference in October, but it could in January, when the NFL’s elite are shooting for the Super Bowl. Had the 49ers opted in that fashion, Purdy might not have been injured. Who can say?

However, in looking ahead, if the 49ers truly wish to be Relevant, bring Rodgers home.

Photographer’s footnote: What is there to say? I watched an amazing game, probably one of the best I have ever seen, really. The crowd was at maximum capacity, and several times during the game my Apple watch was warning me that I was being exposed to extremely loud conditions, over 90 decibels. At one point during a timeout I opened the audio app which measures the noise level, and it was at 102! I could only imagine what it was really hitting during the moments the Gaels took the lead and held on for the win in overtime.

The Las Vegas Festival Grounds, one of the proposed locations on the Las Vegas Strip for a new Oakland A’s ballpark.

A’s Fisher and Kaval Met with Las Vegas Casino Owner

by Amaury Pi-Gonzalez

The top brass of the Oakland A’s was back in Las Vegas to continue discussions on a potential relocation to Las Vegas, Nevada. It has been reported that A’s owner John Fisher and team president Dave Kaval met with resort operators on The Strip.

There are two potential sites. One that went silent in recent months is the Las Vegas Festival Grounds owner and casino magnate Phil Ruffin. Now it is said that this site is back and still in play for the A’s. It is a 39-acre site for a potential retractable dome stadium. Perspective: How big are 39 acres for a baseball stadium? The San Francisco Giants’ Oracle Park is just 14 acres.

The other location for A’s interest is in The Strip as the executives met on the 66th floor of Resorts World, to get a good bird’s eye view. Meanwhile, there is total silence from the Oakland A’s and the city of Oakland regarding the projected Howard Terminal, which has suffered more setbacks recently.

Oakland failed to secure more than $180 million in federal funds which would have benefited the A’s proposed waterfront ballpark and surrounding development, raising the question of whether the city will be able to get the project done. The A’s also lost a lawsuit over regulating the steel company which is next to a proposed site for building a new waterfront stadium.

This is what’s going on in the A’s Saga.

Thoughts on Super Bowl Stadiums...

Everybody knows Super Bowl LVII is being played for the third time in Glendale Arizona. This link will take you to a list of the stadiums where the Super Bowl has been played. Only once has the game been played in an un-domed stadium in a cold climate. Genius status goes to you if you know where that was.

Which city hosted the coldest Super Bowl ever?

Hint: It was not played in the un-domed stadium in a cold climate, nor was it played in Minneapolis -- Super Bowl XXVI -- where the temperature at game time was

9° but very comfortable inside the Metrodome.

A hearty round of applause goes to those who know

who the contestants were!

Dubs' Report

The Dubs’ Turnaround –

by Howard Pearlstein

The Dubs have had a variety of problems, but the most pressing one involved integrating the new players (rookies and others) into the game, getting players ready and able to do the dance without stepping on toes.

But that part of the problem got resolved to some extent. But the people who pointed it out were wrong. The Toronto game wasn’t the turning point.

It was the game on the road against the Cavs. The starting lineup was missing, out with injury or unable to play for other reasons. In other words, it was the entire Death Lineup (remember them?) --the Death Lineup ---Steph, Klay, Draymond, Andre, and except for Durant, replaced by Wiggins. They were all out for the game, one of the few against an opposing team with a winning record.

And when that was announced, I had an automatic “Oh shit,” reaction. But I had to watch, having been toughened by teenage years in the 50s going to games in Philly. Boot camp for Warriors’ fans.

Kuminga and JaMychal were back, so I wanted to see them. And Jordan Poole still in, giving us a starting lineup of Kuminga, Ty Jerome, Kevon Looney, and Donte DiVincenzo and a total rotation of 8 players – including JaMychal Green.

Well, hell. Might as well see how far the newer guys have come along.

And they won. On the road. Against an opponent with a winning record!

So one problem – a big one, seemed under control. Seemed to be proven in the game against Toronto.

But there were still other problems. Like coming on like gang busters against the Grizzlies in the first quarter, the dance working quite well, but then fading away in the fourth, until the best they could do was force OT, which kept their losing record of 2 and 15 over the last five seasons intact and continuing. Fading away in the fourth the next one to figure out.

There were still some problems with the newbies and even the vets, passes thrown and no one there, but having the entire team together to play game after game hasn’t been a thing, until, we can hope -- now.

There are also things that go beyond the elements of training and physiology and scheduling and such, that happen (or fail to happen) for no known reason. It’s why I use the term magic because I always liked the definition of it as “Any technology in which we don’t understand how it works.” But that’s only until we do.

Here’s hoping that gets figured out soon.

One mystery during the Grizzlies game -- a commercial for Applebee’s which used the Rolling Stones’ Start Me Up. Because, with one exception, the Stones NEVER allow any of their songs to be used for commercials. The one exception when Bill Gates showed up and asked How Much to use that song for his new version of Windows.

The manager who met him came into the meeting of the musicians and Mick Jagger said, “We don’t do that.” Then he was told that Bill Gates himself had come in person to which Jagger he said “F--k him. Go back out there and tell him 12 million dollars.”

And he did.

And Gates wrote out a check for that amount, and the Stones were stuck – they’d quoted a price, impossible or not.

So how does Applebee’s get to use it too? It’s a mystery to me. Must be some sort of magic.

Howard Pearlstein has been a few places and done a few things.

An old friend once said, "Howard, you live your life like you're trying to fill in a dust jacket blurb." Well, then all I have to do is write a book that will get published.

Arnold Schwarzenegger -- from the Autograph Collection of Rich Yee

Before becoming an action movie star Arnold Schwarzenegger started out as a bodybuilder. He was crowned Mr. Olympia seven times between 1970-1980.

I was fortunate enough to meet Arnold Schwarzenegger several times. The first time I met him was at the San Francisco Fairmont Hotel in 1978. I overheard the hotel staff mention his name and I asked if he’s ever stayed at the hotel. They said he was in the lounge that very moment. I grabbed a sheet of hotel notepaper and headed to the lounge. I saw him sitting with an older man having a drink. I went up to him and asked, “Are you Arnold Schwarzenegger?” He looked at me, smiled and quickly pointed to the older gentleman sitting with him. We all laughed and I asked for his autograph. He signed the paper I had and answered a few questions I had on his recent movie Pumping Iron.

It was days later that I recognized who the older gentleman was with Arnold. It was none other than Joe Weider, the Father of bodybuilding, the cofounder of the International Federation of BodyBuilders (IFBB), creator of Mr. Olympia contests, publisher of Muscle & Fitness, Flex and Shape

Five Hundred Wins: For Saint Mary’s Randy Bennett, It’s More Than Just a Number

by Ben Enos

Moraga, CA - In 22 seasons as Saint Mary’s men’s basketball coach, Randy Bennett’s impact on Saint Mary’s College goes well beyond 500 on-court victories.

It isn’t in Saint Mary’s men’s basketball coach Randy Bennett’s character to sing his own praises.

Asking him to reflect on the magnitude of reaching 500 wins as a head coach elicits the same humble and unassuming answers Bennett has given throughout his entire 22-year career at Saint Mary’s. When the Gaels defeated San Francisco on Thursday night, Bennett officially achieved a coaching milestone that few ever have.

Hardly Trivial Answer by T. Buff

Tulane Stadium In New Orleans

The coldest Super Bowl game in NFL history was Super Bowl VI, which was hosted at Tulane Stadium in New Orleans, Louisiana. The game might have been played in the typically hot south, but the temperature was a bone-chilling 39° F (4° C), making it the coldest Super Bowl

ever played.

Super Bowl VI was between the Dallas Cowboys and the Miami Dolphins, with the Cowboys routing the Dolphins 24–3. Cowboys QB Roger Staubach was the MVP, beginning America's team's legacy.

It all began on a cold day in New Orleans, Louisiana. Thanks to the folk at this link for the great answer.  (I would never consider 39° as bone-chilling.)

Super Bowl XLVIII (2014) was the only game held in a “cold weather” city without a domed stadium. It was held at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on February 2, 2014, and although the weather was mild, with a game-time temperature of 49°F, eight inches of snow fell the very next day.

So much info, so little time.

The recipes are explicitly presented.

Many people -- maybe even you -- have been getting out on their bikes more during Shelter-in-Place. "Check for Bikes" clings and bumper stickers are great ways to keep bicyclists safer out there on the road by promoting awareness by drivers to share the road. Keep safe out there and keep your neighbors safe by using or passing along vinyl clings for inside a car window or windshield and 4" circular bumper stickers. We have Youth and Spanish versions, too!
