Year End Letter
Dear Montrose Zion Church Family,
The year 2020 has probably been one of the strangest years most have us have experienced in our lifetime. I must admit that the challenges we faced this past year filled me with more doubt than I care to recall. But even in the midst of uncertainty, God’s light finds a way through the cracks and brokenness of our existence. Let me emphasize, God always finds a way.
I am a social animal. I miss seeing your kids and grandkids- especially in the “children’s moment” in worship. I miss seeing all of you and the great conversations we share in person and the smiles and the laughter and the energy that share with one another. We will be there again. Of this I am certain. God has and will see us through.
I want to truly thank you for faithfulness this last year. What could have been an outright disaster turned out to be the opposite. I give our Lord and Savior all the credit for guiding our steps down this path and for you all for having the courage to walk it. I would like to share a few of the highlights that have touched my heart over these last few months.
  • Our congregation led a weekly devotional study on the book of Mark. I thought 16 weeks and 16 chapters would have seen us through this. How naïve of me! But hearing your heart and insights and faith was edifying to us all.
  • I have a great deal of thankfulness for the innovation of people in our church family. I had only briefly considered a major online presence for our ministry in the past. Necessity gives birth to ingenuity. New equipment was purchased to enable live streaming and technology was installed and utilized which allowed us to reach out beyond our Akron community.
  • In 2019, our average worship attendance was 195. This year’s in person numbers had increased to 200 prior to the pandemic. But when we reached out online, our average number of people we are reaching jumped to 282. I have received some of the kindest notes from people I do not know who have connected across the state of Ohio and beyond who make use of our online worship.
  • Thank you all who have recorded and installed (the Fertig family, Beals and so many others), sung solos, played instruments, read Scripture, held Sunday School (youth and adult), shared reflections, online and in person VBS, and put on an AMAZING children’s Christmas program (you will never fully know the amount of faith and work that went into putting that baby together- thank you Bethany, Joe, and Milissa!!!).
  • Before the pandemic we had started catalyst groups within the community (intentional faith gatherings outside the church walls and connected to local businesses). We will return to these and they show much promise!
  • We started a Tailgate Service and learned how to broadcast our service via shortwave radio. Brian Beal built us an amazing portable pulpit. Many people said it took them back to warm memories of outdoor worship at church camps they experienced as children. We have ideas about worshipping outdoors again periodically in the summer just because it is fun. We are equipped to do that now!
  • In mission we continue to reach out.
  • OPENM and Findley Schools have benefitted from your faithfulness
  • Through Africa Inland Missions we have supported Joel Gerberich as he is serving Christ spreading faith and health in South Sudan.
  • We have given now over $9,000 towards the Teach, Reach, Bless Campaign to provide a safe, nurturing environment in the form of a new dormitory for women at the Africa University in Zimbabwe.
  • We put together care packages for a local women’s shelter, sang hymns for residents at Heritage Crossing, created Capes for Courage for children battling major illness, and so much more. Love never ceases.
As a brief summary of our financial picture, we ended 2020 with a positive cash flow. Our regular giving was down about 10%, but our investment income was stronger than anticipated and we received rebates from the Bureau of Worker’s Comp and a payroll tax rebate from the IRS, both of which were one-time events and related to the pandemic. In addition, we trimmed expenses wherever possible. All budget categories were below budget except for our Worship budget, which was on-target in spite of our need to purchase some new equipment to facilitate our Online Worship presence. In total, we ended the year with approximately $12,000 more in our bank account than when we started.
Thank you all for your faithfulness! I have only touched on a small portion of the faith we have shared with one another. We have done all of these things together as the Body of Christ! I leave you with these words from our Savior Jesus Christ.

John 16:33
33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

In Christ’s name,

The Reverend Dr. William C. Liming, Jr.
News and Opportunities to Serve

February Challenge

For the month of February we have the challenge of collecting 10,000 tablets of "low dose aspirin." When we asked OPEN M for their most pressing need they said they have had a hard time getting low dose aspirin for their medical clinic. With this need in mind and with February being Heart Health Awareness Month, we know that this is the perfect time for us to fulfil this need. You can drop off your donation in the box outside the main doors at any time, you can also order aspirin to be delivered directly to the church through Amazon or any other delivery service. Updates will be provided during our worship service each week with our progress.
*Sams Club and Cosco currently have Bayer Low Dose Apsirin on sale right now!

Lenten Book Study

Our Lenten Book Study is “Savior: What the Bible says about the Cross”. The Cross is the central symbol of the Christian faith. But what does the Cross mean? The author of Savior, Magrey deVega, guides us through the images of Jesus’s death and resurrection to achieve a richer understanding of the Christian faith. By exploring the mystery of salvation through the cross, we can deepen our love for God and others and strengthen our commitment to follow Jesus.

This virtual book study meets each Sunday for 6-weeks starting on February 21 at 11:00 am in Zoom. It is a great opportunity to catch-up with your church family and discuss our faith. The room opens at 10:45 am to casually meet and visit with others. We begin at 11:00 am with everyone given the opportunity to say hello and share happenings in their lives. A video is viewed with discussion following. The session will end at noon. For information, please contact Sue Kroll at suekroll@att.net for the Zoom meeting number.

Diaper Collection

The diapers collected during the month of January have been delivered to OPEN M this week. We collected over 6000 diapers!!

Lenten Study

We will be doing a study based on the book "Soul Reset" By Junius Dotson. Each week we will look at ways of being with God. The goal for all of us is wholeness and this study will help students learn practical tips for stepping away from "constant business and allowing God to transform their life." This study will run February 21st through March 28th. We will meet from 11:15-12pm Youth are encouraged to attend the worship service at 10am either in person or on YouTube and then attend this study. The study will have a virtual and in person option

Mission Trip

I have had a few questions about the mission trip this year. The plan for this year as of right now is to have it locally again. Hopefully this year we are able to go to some of the local charities that we have here in the area. We will probably split into groups of ten, coming together as a group in the morning and the evening. Tentatively the dates are June 22-24. More details to follow.

School will be closed Monday, February 1st for Revere Record Day

We will start our week by writing the Letter “Q” with quills, making some cheese quesadillas, counting quarters, creating a sculpture with Q-tips and learning the Queen of Hearts nursery rhyme complete with homemade tarts. On Thursday, the children will be sharing special treats and cards with their friends and teachers at preschool to celebrate “God’s Love” with a special Valentine’s Party. There will be no school on Friday, February 12th and Monday, 15th due to us following the Revere District school Calendar.
We are also very excited to be dropping off our very special handmade Heart Placemats to the St. Edwards Rehab Center which they will use for their Valentines Party with their residents.
Registration for our 2021/2022 school year will begin this month. Please help us advertise our preschool by taking a flyer to your place of employment, Mother’s Group, or to your neighborhood friends with children.
