FAITH that Works
“But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”
7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. 9 Be wretched and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. 10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.
11 Do not speak evil against one another, brothers. The one who speaks against a brother or judges his brother, speaks evil against the law and judges the law. But if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge.12 There is only one lawgiver and judge, he who is able to save and to destroy. But who are you to judge your neighbor?”James 4:7-12 ESV
Returning to God (4:7-8)
Living with joyful grief (4:9-10)
Dealing with one another (4:11-12)
Game Plan This Week:
- Review the sermon
o What were the main points?
o What points were most meaningful to you?
- Study/discuss the text
o From James 4:7-8, what does submission to God look like in our daily lives? What is our part in submitting to God?
o What makes submitting to anything so difficult? Explain your reasoning.
- Break into smaller groups and discuss these items:
o How would you define repentance to someone who has no Bible knowledge?
o “He will lift you up” (v. 10). How does this passage move you to appreciate the grace of God more today than you did yesterday?
o How is speaking evil against another tied to speaking against the Law?
- This week make a commitment to sit down often with God and discuss how you can live out this passage.
o Contemplate on this question: What areas of my life do I need to submit to God?
o How does this passage change your prayer life?
o Continue to build on the daily habit of prayer this week.
o Ask God who are the three people that are not followers of Jesus that you need to begin praying for.
