4-H Way: "Message from Mary"
Mary Ciricillo, Director of California 4-H Foundation
I am very proud to write this note of thanks to all of you. 2020 had its challenges, but it didn’t slow our 4-H youth and the 4-H staff and adult volunteers that support them!

The Statewide Class Ambassadors kept our 4-H’ers positive and smiling with their January “Can Do Campaign” shared widely on 4-H social media channels. And, you were there helping the California 4-H Foundation hit a record breaking milestone raising over $100,000 in one day on Giving Tuesday! Your support will help local 4-H programs throughout California continue to inspire and motivate 4-H youth to be the best that they can be.

The California 4-H Foundation Board members came through on their promise with 100 percent participation on Giving Tuesday hitting their goal in support of the California 4-H “Back to Basics” initiative.

Please share the value that 4-H provides our youth today by sharing the California 4-H Annual Report, and joining me on February 17th at 10:00am to learn more about the
California 4-H Foundation. More details and the Zoom link below.

Thank you again for all you do for California youth!

4-H STEM Project Takes Students to Mars
As part of a science lesson last month, sixth-grade students at Avery Middle School took a virtual trip to Mars. The other worldly experience was made possible with Mars Base Camp 4-H STEM Challenge kits funded by a donation to the 4-H Youth Development Program in Calaveras County.

“A generous donation to 4-H in Calaveras County made it possible to buy 450 of the Mars Base Camp 4-H STEM Challenge family kits for local school children,” said JoLynn Miller, UC Cooperative Extension 4-H advisor.

“I was able to buy enough of the 4-H STEM kits for every sixth-grader in Calaveras County and, with the help of Calaveras County Office of Education, send them to their teachers,” said Miller, who hopes the activities spark an interest in science, technology, engineering and math in the students.

“The activities show kids how STEM skills can be applied to the world around them and because the family kits can be used by three or four people, they can share the experience with their parents and siblings.”

"It was wonderful to get the students engaged in hands-on learning and so nice that every student had their own supplies. We're so grateful to donors who's gifts truly make a difference for our youth."
Do You Have a 4-H Highlight Story to Tell?
4-H youth and volunteers across our state amaze us with their accomplishments. If you know a 4-H youth, volunteer, or donor that deserves their moment in the sun, please share their story! You might read about them here--and inspire others!

4-H Giving: How Can I Support?
Early birds are leading the way with the 4-H Debit Card
Alumni, volunteers and parents have swooped in to start using the 4-H Debit Card. Early signs indicate this can be a windfall for local county clubs and programs.

Using the card helps fund youth recognition and more - without having to donate
or figure out new ways to fundraise. Thank you, early birds!

How early birds are using their 4-H Cards:
  • Online subscriptions (e.g., Amazon Prime, Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, Spotify, Audible, games, news)
  • Online bill payments to other merchants (e.g., cell phone, home wireless)
  • Ad hoc online purchases (e.g., groceries, clothing, gifts)
  • Local shopping (e.g., groceries, coffee shop, craft shops, etc.)
  • AND - 4-H projects and animal care, of course

Later this month, the 4-H Card mobile app will increase convenience and allow you to see your personal impact. It will also connect to smaller credit unions or community banks, a big plus.

Join the flock! Click here to learn more. New users will apply directly through the Android or Apple app - we’ll let you know when you can download it later this month.

We’d love our alumni and friends to turn their everyday living into a formidable
fundraising flock.
