Tides of Freedom: Spain & The Battle for American Independence

February 2, 2026

5:00pm

Long before Texas became part of the United States, Spain played a decisive role in shaping the outcome of the American Revolution, a story now brought to light at the Texas Maritime Museum with the opening of Tides of Freedom: Spain & the Battle for American Independence. This exhibit is part of the Texas America250 initiative to commemorate and celebrate 250 years of American independence in 2026.

The Texas Maritime Museum will host an opening reception for this exciting new exhibit on Monday, February 2nd, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. This special evening celebration will feature light refreshments and a presentation by noted historian Caroline Crimm, offering guests a deeper look into Spain’s vital place in the fight for American Independence.

Tides of Freedom explores how Spanish influence, leadership, and resources helped shape the course of the Revolutionary War, an especially meaningful story for Texas, which was part of Spain’s American territories during this pivotal era. Through captivating storytelling and historical highlights, the exhibit sheds light on the strategic importance of the Gulf Coast, the Mississippi River, and the Spanish frontier.

The opening reception is open to the public and provides a welcoming opportunity for history enthusiasts, educators, and community members to engage with the exhibit, enjoy conversation, and experience the Museum’s newest installation.
