February's Animal of the Month: American Avocet
These beautiful and elegant wading birds are showing their cinnamon breeding color on their heads and necks. Breeding is in spring. After breeding the cinnamon color turns gray. Both parents cooperate in incubating the eggs, and then in fiercely protecting the chicks. Avocets are found mainly in the western part of the USA in marshes, lakes, and along the coast. They winter at Bolsa Chica and other southern California coastal marshes and into southern Mexico. Avocets have long, thin upcurved bills which they sweep gracefully from side to side in mudflats and shallow wetlands to bring up shrimp, crabs, insects, aquatic vegetation, and seeds to eat.
18” long; 31” wingspan; 11 ounces
