Hotter, Wetter, Weirder: Climate Change in Philadelphia

Mike Weilbacher

Naturalist, Writer, Educator, Consultant

7:00 PM, Friday, February 21, 2025

As 2021’s Hurricane Ida showed us, climate change is already happening in Philadelphia as our region gets hotter, wetter, and decidedly weirder. But what’s the evidence for climate change locally? What are our area’s trends in temperature and rainfall? You’ll not only be surprised by the data but motivated to find solutions. In this must-see lecture, writer-naturalist Mike Weilbacher walks you through the science, carefully answering your questions while weaving in politics, pop culture, and even a pop quiz.

A long-time environmental educator, Mike travels the region offering lectures and walks on a variety of natural and environmental topics. He last lectured for the Liberty Bird Alliance in November 2022 about his book, “Wild Philly: Explore the Amazing Nature in and Around Philadelphia,” and will be selling and signing his books after the lecture.

Preregistration for our monthly meetings is requested. Go to the Events calendar at libertybirdalliance.org

FIELD TRIPS

A Note About Our Field Trips: We encourage participants to regularly check both the Liberty Bird Alliance website and Facebook page in advance of a field trip as the meeting location can change due to road construction, a park closure, weather conditions, or other last-minute reasons. If you have

any questions about a field trip, please contact: libertybirdalliance@gmail.com.

Plan to arrive a few minutes before the scheduled time of the field trip. The time stated is the STARTING time, not the arrival time. This will give you time to get yourself ready, say hello, visit a restroom, and be ready to go. For all-day trips, please come prepared with lunch and have a full tank of gas.

Participant Release: Your decision to participate in an Audubon field trip or event signifies that you agree to not hold the Liberty Bird Alliance or any of its agents responsible for any accidents, losses, damages, or injuries resulting from your participation in the field trip or event.

Barnegat Lighthouse State Park

8:30 AM TO 1:00 PM, February 22, 2025

Leaders: Leigh Altadonna and Linda Widdop

Join us at Barnegat Lighthouse State Park, an excellent area to observe many species of birds during the spring and fall migrations. A New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife program provides seasonal fencing of critical nesting areas on the beach adjacent to the park. This provides protection for certain endangered beach-nesting birds and opportunities for observation. The park is also a great location for viewing wintering waterfowl such as red-breasted mergansers, common eiders, and harlequin ducks. This is a joint field trip of the Liberty Bird Alliance and the Delaware Valley Ornithological Club.

Please preregister so we can keep you informed on the final scheduling of this field trip.
