CIENEGA/EMPIRE HELP WILCOX AFTER FIRE

WILCOX HIGH SCHOOLCienega Student Council teamed together with Empire Student Council to raise money and school supplies for Willcox High School to assist them after their tragic fire that destroyed a significant part of the school. It was an eye opening experience for the Student Council Officers who went on the trip to deliver the supplies. As many of them stated, it is one thing to hear about the fire but to actually see the effects of it changes your perspective. The student body of Willcox High School greeted both schools by holding a Pep Rally to honor both schools. Cienega Student Council would like to extend a BIG THANK you to Empire Student Council for inviting Cienega Student Council to take part in this fundraiser.

CAT'S HOPE GIVES BACK BIG!!!

On Monday, February 14th - Valentines Day some students from Cat's Hope took a trip to UMC's Arizona Cancer Center and Diamond Children's Center to drop off over 700 Valentine's Day Cards to cancer patients.  These cards were made by various schools in the district.  Cat's Hope is a club that supports people going through or who have gone through cancer in various ways.  This was just one of them.  Along with the Valentine's cards, our students brought heart-shaped cookies and juice and gave them all out to patients.  If you are interested in being a part of this giving group, they meet during AB on Thursday's in the 100 Conference Room. Thanks Cats Hope for making a difference!

BELL SCHEDULE TO REMAIN THE SAME

The bell schedule for the 2011/2012 school year has been a topic of conversation for well over a month. With the budget constraints facing education, it may be necessary to change our bell schedule for the 2012/2013 school year to a 1 - 6 period day. However, for the upcoming school year, 2011/2012 - the current block schedule will be in effect.

ONE CAN A WEEK

ONE CAN A WEEKDustin Strouse and Dustin Baker have been working hard for the past several months to help create a program we are calling "One Can A Week". I was fortunate enough to meet these young men when I asked the Marketing teacher, Kim Franzen, if she had any students that might be interested in helping me develop an idea that could generate enough food to form a community food bank in Vail. These two inspirational young men starting working right away. They developed a marketing plan and met with local businesses to see if we could gain local support. They created informational brochures, posters and a logo with our slogan "Vail Community = Unity". They put together a professional presentation to share their ideas with me and then continued to develop and grow those ideas. Through their hard work and dedication we have been able to pull together several schools, civic organizations and local churches to join as a community and ultimately end hunger in Vail. It is a constant reminder to me that some of our greatest resources are sitting in our classes everyday. If we trust them enough and provide them with opportunities to reach out to the community, not only will they do it, they will do it with passion and pride.

MARCH INFORMATION FOR SENIORS

If your student is taking any courses through correspondence or Dual Enrollment through Pima, it is their responsibility to bring the transcript from that school to the registrar in order to get credit for the class and to be able to participate in graduation ceremonies.  This deadline is MAY 1st unless taking a Pima class.  That deadline will be two days after the class has been completed.

If 7 absences are accumulated in any class regardless of the reason, unless it is a school related activity, THE STUDENT WILL NOT PASS THE CLASS AND WILL NOT GRADUATE IF THE CLASS IS A REQUIREMENT FOR GRADUATION! An appeal may be scheduled after May 1st for illness or extenuating circumstances.

Seniors planning on attending a four year college should have applied to their schools by now.  You may lose valuable scholarship opportunities by procrastinating any longer.

Be sure to check the CHS Website for updated scholarship opportunities.  The link can be found by entering the website at http://chs.vail.k12.az.us  click on  "Counselor" link, from there click on "Scholarships".  This page is updated regularly, so check back often.

Senioritis can sometimes creep up on students.  Please be aware of this and monitor your students attendance and grades carefully so that there will be no unhappy surprises in May when it is time to celebrate the graduation of your son or daughter from Cienega.

Please utilize PowerSchool on a regular basis and stay informed of the progress your son or daughter is making in his or her classes http://ps2.vail.k12.az.us/public/

CAT FRAT SEEKING NEW LEADERSHIP FOR 2010-2012 SCHOOL YEAR

Of this year's officers, only the treasurer will be seeking nomination for next year.  If you are interested in helping your child's school, please consider becoming an officer.

CAT FRAT does not operate like other school PTA's.  At the high school level, needs are different.  We do not ask students to sell anything.  Our fundraising efforts are mainly from membership, as well as popcorn sales at the football games, Cienega water bottles, and E-Scrip.  Cat Frat financially supports many programs that affect EVERY student at Cienega.  Without CAT FRAT, these activities would not be possible:

Snacks provided for Bobcat Student of Success (providing snacks for 450 students).

  • Teacher/Staff Appreciation Lunches
  • Teacher/Staff Breakfast and Gifts in May
  • Dessert at Senior Honors Night
  • Phat Cat Prizes
  • Student Club assistance

The next Cat Frat meeting is April 11th at 6:30pm in the Library.

FRENCH EXCHANGE STUDENTS TO VISIT CHS

From March 3 to March 10, students from a school in Northeastern France will be visiting Cienega and 5 other High Schools in the Tucson area.  The students will follow a host student from class to class and watch how things work here in America.  At night the students go home with their host student and experience family life in Arizona.  Since these students are coming from the same school, their teachers will also be watching over them while they are here.

The French students are chosen for this experience by their teachers because they are well behaved and they can handle life away from home for a couple of weeks.  They come here because they must be fluent in other languages in order to graduate from High School back in France.  Plus, they are curious about life in America and are eager to visit the 'Great' Canyon while they are here.  They want to experience what we go through everyday.  These students are courageous and adventurous, aren't they?

The school is located in Northeastern France near the city of Thionville. The French students are all 14 years old and in the 9th grade.  They are coming to Cienega because last year's Exchange students loved it here so much.  They had the chance to go to Boston, but chose to come back here because they wanted to visit our students at Cienega again. Comments from last year's group included that our school was super clean, the kids were all so nice, and they were amazed by how everyone was so accepting.  Our Cienega students made quite an impression. This year, we hope to create a memory book about their stay so future students can know what it's like to participate in an Exchange.

If you would like to host a student in the future, they also come to Arizona in the summer during the entire month of July.  Anyone in the area may host if you have a child of High School age, your family speaks primarily English in the home, and you have an extra bed the student may use while here.  The Exchange students do not require a room of their own.  All you need to do is open your home and your heart to a student from France for a little while.  I know you will enjoy the rewards of such and experience.

Interested in hosting in the summer or next year?  Contact Debora Webb at [email protected] or Phillip McNeal at [email protected].  We would love to have you join us in hosting these students from France and opening your home to something new.
