A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT

Rebecca Wakefield, CMP
MPI New Jersey has allowed me to serve in various leadership roles over the years thru serving on committees and in Board positions. It has been a great opportunity to hone my leadership skills for my career as a Senior planner at KPMG and prepared me greatly for my Presidency of MPI New Jersey for the 2019/2020 term.

Although, many of us do not serve in roles of authority at our jobs, that does not mean that we are not leaders in our own right.   Leaders emerge within all levels of an organization. Leaders strive to enhance the lives of those that surround them. Leaders make you feel safe and supported. Leaders want better opportunities for you then they have.

What kind of leader do you want to be? I have been inspired by the below video of Simon Sinek, "Why Good Leaders Make You Feel Safe" and hope you'll take the time to watch to be inspired too.

Then, there are some leaders that you come in contact with that leave an impact on your life and make you strive to be a better leader too.  Past President, Pamela James, CMP was one of those leaders for our MPI New Jersey family, who we unfortunately lost early last week.  Pam was one to support others and encourage each of us to reach out full potential all while making us smile. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.  Please read Pam's full bio below and let's all share a little extra kindness today in Pam's memory.

It is with great sadness to announce the passing of one of our beloved former Chapter Presidents and current member of MPI New Jersey, Pamela James, CMP.  Pam has been a long standing member of MPI New Jersey and served as Chapter President from 2004-2005 and was involved in the Golf Committee and Special Events through the years.  Pam was also a member of PCMA Greater Philadelphia Chapter, assisting with their fund raising efforts whenever she could, ASAE, CMP Conclave and was a supporter of SPIN.   She felt strongly about giving back to the industry and has tried to remain active attending industry conferences whenever she could.

She had a long career in Atlantic City having worked for Tropicana Casino and Resort and most recently at Resorts Casino Hotel as a Senior Sales Manager.  She was a big supporter of Atlantic City and participated in charitable events not only in the city but also in her hometown.  Her favorite charity was HIP, Hazelton Integration Project.  The Hazleton Integration Project is a community-based effort that seeks to unite the people of many different cultures who now call Hazleton home.   www.hip1.org

Pam loved to play and watch golf, travel, and spend time with family and friends.   She is originally from Freeland, PA and has been in the Atlantic City area for the last 20+ years.  Anyone who knew Pam knew how amazing she was.  She always greeted you with a smile, hug, lent you a shoulder, ear and most will remember her by her laughter and sense of humor.  She was a great storyteller, her life was full of antics, hilarious situations in the industry and finding humor even in the darkest of situations was her specialty.   She is sure to be missed dearly.  We will all keep her memory alive and our thoughts and prayers go out to her family as well.

EVENT RECAP
JANUARY EDUCATION PROGRAM

In today's world crisis management should be on the forefront of our strategic event management plans.   On January 31, 2020 Alex Plaxen shared with us the importance of how to use time-sensitive communications channels, including social media.   If a crisis occurs, who has the role of coordinator during an emergency? What are the next steps? Who is managing and directing the communication process?  These are a few topics we discussed.

Alex also reviewed effective crisis communication steps to avoid risk and damage while highlighting poorly developed plans and how to avoid similar consequences for your organization.   It was an informative and certainly eye-opening presentation.  If you have a crisis communications plan, keep it current and review it. But if you do not, this presentation was a great first step towards building a strategic plan that will keep your attendees safe and informed.   It's critical to your event to develop a crisis communication plan.  As leaders of the events we design, we need to respond in a moment to emergency situations and communicate across multiple platforms.

If you missed Alex at our program, he offers in depth courses thru MPI Academy you won't want to miss.   Learn More Here

INDUSTRY INSIGHTS
INDUSTRY NEWS FROM PHARMA SUMMIT
President-Elect Kathy Grau had the privilege of moderating two keynote panel discussions at the 8th Annual Pharmaceutical and Medical Meetings Summit in Boston on March 10 - 12. One of the panel discussions was "Regulatory Updates: Examine Current Trends within a nd Outside the US" Kathy wanted to share some things with MPI New Jersey that was discussed during this session.

The first thing discussed was the collaboration between MPI and IPCAA (International Pharmaceutical Congress Advisory Association).  An update on how the US and Europe are working together was provided. On January 31st, IPCAA and representatives of the MPI-MD Advisory Board met for a planning session to prepare for an impactful and relevant US update on an International Compliance Event.  This event is to be held in the U.S., likely in Q3/Q4, 2020 and is designed to provide a high-level overview of the differences between U.S. and European congresses and the latest changes in compliance regulations worldwide.

The panel talked about the changes with EFPIA (European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations). EFPIA represents the pharmaceutical industry operating in Europe, through its direct membership of 36 national associations and 39 leading pharmaceutical companies. EFPIA's mission is to create a collaborative environment that enables it's members to innovate, discover, develop and deliver new therapies and vaccines for people across Europe, as well as contribute to the European economy and better outcomes for patients. If you are interacting with HCPs from Europe, it's important to know and understand their code. The code can be found here.    Chapter 2 highlights interactions with HCPs, HCOs AND PO. Article 10.05 addresses the monetary threshold of each country for meals.

There was a lot of discussion around GDPR and CCPA. Data privacy is a hot topic and also very important to us as individuals and our attendees. Most of the panel said that their internal data privacy, compliance, and/or legal department handled changes to ensure they were GDPR compliance. The panel discussed that most internal departments aren't aware of exactly what the meetings & events team does including the type of data we collect, and how we use and share that data. When asked, most people said they aren't encrypting reports (rooming, VIP, travel manifests, etc.) before sending via email either internally or externally. The importance of encrypting any document that has PII (personally identifiable information) was discussed as was the importance of getting consent from attendees to share information. This should be added to registration sites.

The consensus was that there is still a lot to be done around data privacy as well as understanding meal caps outside the US. We all agreed that it was important to partner with your internal stakeholders including but not limited to meeting requestors, compliance, regulatory, data privacy, legal.

COMMUNICATION CORNER
COMMUNICATION TIP

Next time you are meeting people, be aware of your "BENEFIT STATEMENT" this may change from person to person, by simply pausing and saying to yourself, "what use can I be to this person".  For example a hairdresser may address a professional woman by saying "we specialize in finding professional looks that are fresh and youthful" or to a younger girl, they may say, "We specialize in styles that are hip and trendy" Both statements are true, but tailored to the audience that it was said to.
