Advocacy Update: Advocacy Day Report
Beth Ebel, MD, MPH, MSc, FAAP
Co-Chair, WCAAP Legislative Committee

Once again, WCAAP's Advocacy Day was a great success! Nearly 100 Chapter members from 29 of Washington's 49 legislative districts braved the snow to travel to Olympia for a day of action as advocates for children. Many were first-time attendees, and we had a dynamic group of resident pediatricians who strode into legislative offices like seasoned pros. Our sincere thanks to each of you for making the time to join us.

Doctors like to talk. We talk to our patients, their families, our multidisciplinary team members, each other. We particularly like to talk about what troubles or frustrates us, the recurrent problems we repeatedly see in our work and potential solutions we envision. But much of this speech stays in the silo of medicine.

WCAAP is participating in the Washington State Department of Health's Special Populations and Vaccine Hesitancy Workgroup. REACH Project: Behavioral Health in Washington
Emily Kemper, MD
Pediatric Resident
Seattle Children's Hospital

As part of Seattle Children's Pediatric Residency Program's track focusing on community health and advocacy, I recently had the opportunity to talk to dedicated primary care pediatricians across the state about their experiences treating mental and behavioral health. I heard from pediatricians across the state, rural and urban, large and small practices.

Talking with Kids About Recreational Drug Use
Yolanda Evans, MD, MPH, FAAP
Associate Professor,  University of Washington Department of Pediatrics
Seattle Children's Hospital
Clinical Director,  Division of Adolescent Medicine

Parents talk with their kids about a wide variety of topics related to safety. Everything from brushing teeth, to the dangers of texting and driving. Talking about drug use is a topic that can be challenging to approach. We want our children to understand the risks while at the same time create opportunities for them to be comfortable coming to us with questions.

WCAAP/Seattle Children's Collaborate for Community Pediatrics "Speed Dating" Event with Residents
Samara Jinks Chang, MD
Pediatric Resident
Seattle Children's Hospital

In an effort to provide additional exposure to community pediatrics for Seattle Children's (SCH) pediatric residents, the Washington Chapter of the AAP partnered this past January with residents to host their fourth annual Community Pediatrics "Speed Dating" mixer. The event brought together pediatric residents and community pediatricians from across the greater Seattle area for dinner, socializing, and a speed-dating style meet-and-greet.
