On Advocacy Day 2021, I poured a cup of coffee, affixed my trusty "The Kids Sent Me" button to my sweater, and opened up my laptop. There was no pre-dawn flight from Spokane to Sea-Tac, no digging through my closet for a suit and a white coat, and no impromptu night at a Katy Perry concert where most of the fans could be our patients. While seeing 90+ colleagues from around the state in little Zoom squares wasn't as much fun as seeing them in person at the Capitol, this challenging year makes me all the more grateful to be part of this community of dedicated pediatricians.

For many months, we have seen images and watched news that is both concerning and incredibly distressing, from the ongoing pandemic and the protests and unrest over the summer to a contentious election cycle and the events that took place at the U.S. Capitol in early January.
Managing distress related to this unrelenting stream of events in our nation can be challenging for adults and children. Parents may struggle with how to talk with their children when events like these take place. Here are a few suggested guidelines providers can share with parents to support their children:

WCAAP/WSNA Project Firstline Infection Prevention - Feb 10 & 24

WCAAP and the Washington State Nurses Association (WSNA) have partnered to bring CDC's Project Firstline infection prevention curriculum to Washington State medical providers who care for children. This Wednesday 2/10
This Wednesday's webinar will cover masking & safe vaccine administration. We will start with COVID-19 and variants, talk about the need for continued vigilance and care to avoid transmission, and discuss masks both within our clinics and out and about in the community. Next, we'll talk about COVID-19 vaccine administration, including:
- Safe vaccine practices for providers & health care staff
- Standard precautions for staff administering vaccines
- Hand hygiene, use of multi-dose vaccine vials, and safe sharps practices.
Finally, we'll give a quick preview our upcoming 2/24 webinar on COVID-19 vaccine with Drs. Ed Marcuse and John Dunn, which will last one full hour instead of our usual 30 minutes (7:00-8:00AM)

WCAAP Oral Health Resources

Pediatricians are well suited to incorporate oral health into their practice because they see children regularly and particularly often during the first 3 years of life. Oral health anticipatory guidance fits nicely with pediatricians' emphasis on prevention and early establishment of lifelong healthy habits. Drs. Charlotte Lewis and Anu Vijay have received a grant from the AAP to further education on oral health topics for AAP members.
This educational material for providers and patients is available on WCAAP.org and we will continue to add information on common oral health problems and emergencies and providing oral health education and fluoride varnish in clinic - including how to maximize reimbursement. This grant provides preliminary funding for what we hope will be an ongoing process of increasing oral health awareness among primary care providers.

Technical Assistance Available from the AAP Distant Care Project

As part of the "Supporting Providers and Families to Access Telehealth and Distant Care Services for Pediatric Care" project, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) is offering free assistance to pediatric health professionals on the following topics:
- Implementation of telehealth and distant care services in pediatric practice
- Implementation of telehealth and teleconsultation for behavioral/mental health services
- Use of telehealth to support adolescent health promotion
- Use of telehealth for children and youth with special health care needs, including those with autism spectrum disorder, other developmental disabilities, and medical complexities
- Use of telehealth in pediatric practices serving rural and underserved communities
Technical assistance services can include connection to tools and resources and subject matter experts. Email [email protected] for assistance requests. AAP Town Halls: The AAP has a bi-weekly series of virtual town halls linking members with leading experts to discuss emerging issues related to the COVID-19 pandemic. The February 4 session focused on addressing uncertainty and looking ahead to year 2.
Autism COE Certification: Seattle Children's Autism Center experts provide the Autism Center of Excellence (COE) trainings, in partnership with communities, through a contract with the Health Care Authority (HCA). Because of COVID-19 concerns, we have currently moved the COE training to a hybrid online model. The next training is this Friday, February 12, 2021, 9am-4pm. Learn more here.

Women's Wellness through Equity and Leadership-Applications Due February 22: Led by the AAP, the Women's Wellness through Equity and Leadership project (WEL) is a collaborative effort among 10 leading US medical associations. WEL leaders are currently recruiting the next cohort and are seeking a diverse group of 50 early- to mid-career women physicians who will engage in networking, mentorship, and training around leadership, equity, and wellness. Plans of Safe Care for Infants Exposed to Opioids Course Promotion: The AAP PediaLink course, Plans of Safe Care for Infants Exposed to Opioids, educates pediatricians about best practices in caring for, and supporting families affected by prenatal opioid exposure. The course topics, opioid use disorder (OUD) as a chronic condition, strategies for engaging birth parents in treatment for OUD, care coordination, and discharge planning for the mother-infant dyad, align with the recommendations in the AAP newly released clinical report, Neonatal Opioid Withdrawal Syndrome.
