President's Message
President’s Message
Happy New Year Chamber Members!
My name is Julie Bonney, a Kodiak resident since 1983. I am excited and honored to be
selected
as Chamber President this year. I own the business, Alaska Groundfish Data Bank - fishery business that focuses on policy, management and research for Kodiak’s processors and commercial fishing vessels home ported
in Kodiak. As we all know, the commercial seafood industry is a large and important economic driver for Kodiak.
I am so looking forward to working with our amazing chamber staff. They make an awesome team that continues to do great things for the members and the Kodiak community – Sarah Phillips (Executive Director), Jena Lowmaster (Community Relations Director) and Anastasia Painter (Administrative Assistant). We are also fortunate to have a young and energetic board of directors that is dedicated to making great things happen for the organization and our island home.
The Coast Guard Appreciation Event – “We Applaud You” – is February 7
th
at the Kodiak Harbor Convention Center. I want to thank the members that donated door prizes and Matson, BP, and Kodiak Area Native Association for sponsoring the event. This annual occasion provides the Kodiak community an opportunity to salute and recognize Coast Guard personnel for their hard work and dedication to make Kodiak a safe place to live, work and raise a family. Guest speaker will be Jennifer Parnell who was rescued by Coast Guard Helicopter from North Sister Mountain while hiking last year.
Business After Hours will be hosted by Residential Mortgage on February 28
th
. Come welcome Carrie Morton back to Kodiak who has reopened the company’s local branch after a short relocation to Anchorage.
I would like to welcome new PIKE member – Wells Fargo and new members – Dejavu Cannabis Company, Ducks Unlimited, Kodiak Sticker Company, Olson Construction & Time of Grace Ministry. Do you own a business or know someone who does? Please suggest that they call Sarah Phillips (486-5557) to join Kodiak Chamber of Commerce – the more business members, the more power and energy we have to achieve great things for Kodiak.
Crazy winter weather this year! Beautiful snow everywhere but hard work too. It has definitely revitalized our snow removal businesses. A big thank you to the city and state crews for clearing our streets. Happy shoveling!
Happy Valentine’s Day – Shop Local for your honey!

Crab Festival Winners Announced!
Thank you to the many artists on & off the Rock that contributed to our Crab Fest Logo & Poster Contests! The decisions to choose winners spanned well beyond our typical time frame for the shear talent the committee was presented with!
Logo Winner:
With over 30 submissions to the contest this year,
Olga Simpson
is the winner of $200 and $200 worth of Crab Festival Merchandise! Her "Sea What Matters" logo features the friendship of a crab and bear lounging in a life ring, while gazing out to Kodiak landscape as a whale tale waves in the distance.
We're looking forward to painting the town Royal Blue with this year's unique design!
|
Poster Winner:
In what has been the tightest competition in recent memory,
Jena Lowmaster
is the 2020 Crab Festival Poster Contest winner and is receiving $200 and $100 worth of Crab Festival Merchandise! Her "Sea What Matters" poster is graphic design art with Kodiak at the heart! Featuring sea life and wildlife, the 7-summits of Kodiak, Pillar Mountain wind turbines, fishing, Coast Guard, bouy four (where it all happens), and our rainy weather, this poster shows off Kodiak!
We're looking forward to seeing this poster hung in the homes and offices of Kodiak for years to come!

The Alaska SBDC Director of Rural Program Development, Ian Grant, will be at the Kodiak Chamber on February 17 and February 18, 2020 to present on developing a business plan.
Description: Financial projections are not only perfect for businesses who are seeking loans or evaluating the validity of a new business idea, but they are also perfect for those existing businesses wanting to ask the important “what if” questions before making any financial decisions. In this two day workshop, we will open a blank projection model for a fictitious company and create this business from start to finish while reviewing key elements in our cash flow statements, and why we may be making certain decisions on pricing, expenses, and strategies. You may bring a laptop computer to experiment with your data or feel free to follow along as we do our case study together over two evenings.
Attending this workshop in person will provide you with an excellent opportunity to meet with the SBDC business advisor also be working with you via distance should you request it.

Productive Procrastination:
What is Top-of-Mind-Awareness (TOMA)?
Nothing drives success for a business more than top-of-mind-awareness (TOMA)? Even though business owners and marketing professionals hear the word TOMA bandied around often, few truly understand what it means and how it leads to success. This episode provides a simple analogy to make it easy to recognize how important it is that your customers think of you first when they need your products or services.
