Thank you for a Successful Party with a Purpose!
FICRA Trust's Party With a Purpose was a great success! The music, the food, and the dancing were stellar and the Auction was all we hoped for. We raised the funds needed to get the windows done in the building and get the irrigation installed in the garden surrounding the building, as advertised. And, we have received encouraging words from a foundation that wants to contribute matching funds - that should do it!

We must all be grateful for the incredible volunteers that pulled this together. It's a ton of work before, during, and after. With the great energy brought by Nelson Jay our auctioneer, Michael Monzon the Flying Knives chef, the Flock of Beagles Band, our Fox Island Ramblers ensemble, and the Metzger light show, the evening was truly alive! Check out the Fox Island Song ( click here).

The record financial results are due to the many folks that sponsored the event or donated items for the auction, and the wonderful generosity of the attendees. That Fox Island sense of community and generosity is what keeps the Nichols Community Center restoration and operation going. Thank you and congratulations to Fox Islanders!
See more photos on FICRA's Instagram site ( click here) and photos taken by the band are available here.
Attention All Fox Island Seniors!
Please attend this Meeting
February 7, 1:00-2:30pm
Fox Island Museum
The Pierce County Department of Human Resources will present to all interested Fox Island seniors, programs that the County offers to assist seniors in daily activities, including handicap assistance. Human Resources has case workers that help evaluate needs. You will learn about their capabilities and how it might serve you as a senior
At that meeting we will also discuss activities that might interest you as a senior whether cards, bingo, bunco, etc. that would be provided by Fox Island organizations. We also hope to learn about your transportation needs.
This meeting will be exploratory and hopefully will lead to ways to improve the lives of Fox Island Seniors. We hope you can join us. The Ficra board supports this effort.
Emergency Planning Updates

Your Emergency Preparedness Team has been striving to assist all Fox Island residents in preparing your
household to handle an emergency situation. Special attention has been directed to supplies to keep on hand - most importantly a 30 day supply of water, food and medicines. Printed publications (The Bucket List) are available from the Pierce County Department of Emergency Management (DEM) to help with that preparation. Many of you have received that information through your Block Captains (BC). For those still in need contact Ray Kittelberger at

The DEM also has information on what supplies to keep in your vehicle in case you are stranded. They suggest a bare minimum kit (BAM) of one gallon of water, a tarp for shelter, blankets or coats to stay warm, flashlights (smartphones), first aid kit. And what about a supply of medicine? We generally leave medicines at home but with a major disaster where the Fox Island bridge might be out of operation they will not be available.

Our Team stands ready to assist you in preparing for, and responding to, an emergency such as the bridge out of operation for a period of time or a major fire or windstorm, but individual household preparation is, by far, the most important step to take.

FICRA Trust Sponsors New 'Scouts BSA'
All Girl Troop
In Scouts BSA, young women go places, test themselves, and have one-of-a-kind adventures that can’t be found anywhere else.
On February 1, for the first time in its 100+ year history, the iconic program of the Boy Scouts of America will be open to young women. "Scouts BSA" is the new name for the existing "Boy Scout" program, as well as the new girls-only Scout Troops that are now forming.
Here on Fox Island, the FICRA Trust sponsors Scouts BSA. Troop 727 is a girls-only, year-round program for girls in fifth grade through high school (ages 11 to 17) that provides fun, adventure, learning, challenge, and responsibility to help them become the best version of themselves.
Outdoor activities include camping, canoeing, hiking, biking, swimming and more, plus girls can now earn the Eagle Scout Award!
The girls of Fox Island's Scouts BSA Troop 727 held their first meeting on December 20th and is now recruiting girls ages 11 to 17 for the upcoming year.
You are invited to join us for an informational meeting on  Sunday February 17, 2019 at 5:00 PM  at the Nichols Community Center at 690 9th Ave, Fox Island, to learn more about Girls in the BSA, and join the fun.
Visit  or call John Ohlson at 253-380-4100 for more information.

Our Instructor:
Aubrey Preston is a resident of Gig Harbor. She started working as a Professional Ballroom Dancer with Arthur Murray in 2006 where she acquired the skills to both teach and perform in the various different partner dances. She left dance instruction and began working as a public school teacher while acquiring her Master’s Degree in Education. After her daughter was born in 2014, she was inspired to start her own business as a Music Education teacher, allowing her to combine her love for children, music and dancing all in one.
Aubrey is thrilled to share her passion of dancing with the Fox Island community.
Aubrey notes that in her experience, the most effective way to learn how to ballroom dance is by practicing with as many people as possible. This is why she suggests switching partners during the lessons. This also allows for a full class even if a few people are absent and empowers students to attend if they don’t have a partner or their partner is unable to attend. In addition, she can offer suggestions for field trips to local dance spots for a night out!
Fox Island Amateur Radio Club (FIARC)

The newly formed Fox Island Amateur Radio Club (FIARC) is up and running and is open to licensed, and non-licensed but interested, alike. Membership in the FIARC is also open to all persons who wish to become involved with the communications in support of the FICRA Trust Emergency Preparedness Program.

The purpose of this club is to provide HAM operators the opportunity to meet and develop their skills and assist in Fox Island Emergency Response. The FIARC was issued the unique amateur call sign of WA7FI. This will be the call sign for our Emergency Operations Center (at the NCC) and will be used for local and statewide drills and training exercises.

The initial club officers are:
  • President Hal Goodell (N7NW),
  • Vice President Nick Genton (KI7CQR),
  • Secretary Jim Braden (KI7CQM) and
  • Trustee Ken Kivett (W7KJ)

Our Fox Island Emergency Preparation Team (under the FICRA Building Trust) has emergency response functions that include the need for HAM radio operators to help in an emergency. In an emergency, communications are vital to our managing a major catastrophe.

The FIARC has practice sessions every Sunday evening at 9:00 PM on 146.50. If you are interested in learning more about that, tune in to the WA7FI net one Sunday evening, and/or call Club Secretary Jim Braden at (253) 459-5588.

The FIARC has offered, and will continue to offer, training classes for persons to obtain their Technician rating to qualify them under FCC rules to operate radios in the prescribed frequencies. The next 2-day training session is scheduled for March 23rd and 24th. If interested in obtaining an amateur license, please email us at

We will be holding open FIARC meetings on an as-needed basis. The next open Club meeting is February 23rd, 10 AM (arrive at 9 AM for a quick meet and greet w/ coffee, etc.) at the Nichols Community Center. Notice of meetings will be published on the events calendar at and in Trust newsletters.

Hal Goodell, N7NW
FIARC President
Citizens' Patrol Updates

So far this winter, we have been very lucky with our weather. Unfortunately, that may be changing with snow and freezing temperatures in the forecast ahead. Please be extra careful driving. With the cold weather coming at night, there may be ice on our roads well into the day.

We want to thank everyone on this island who donated to our group during 2018. We had a very successful year – few incidents and our crime remains very low. We want to continue that through 2019.

Reminder – if you see something suspicious, contact the non-emergency number of the Pierce County Sheriffs' Department: (253) 798-7530, or after 3:00pm, call (253) 593-2425.

You can let Citizens' Patrol know you have done so on the Citizen Patrol hot line: (253) 549-7744.
