A Look at What Students Have Been Up To!

|
Game nights, craft sessions, contests, intramural teams, door decorating contests, movies at Cyclone Cinema - all sorts of stuff happens on campus. Though everything is done a bit differently to keep students healthy, we thought it might be fun to see what students have been up to! Click on the pictures above to see a few area's Instgram pages.
Students also get a newsletter every Friday full of important info, ways to connect and things to do for the upcoming week. Take a look at these past editions: 2/5, 1/29, 1/22, 1/15, 12/11. We're here for your student - encourage them to connect with us if they need anything!

Room and Apartment Selection is Open Now
|
|
If your student is considering living on campus next year, the selection process is happening this month. We outlined the process in an email we sent out earlier this month (you can review that here). This process gives your student the most possible options. Your student just follows the dates here, logs in here, finds a space they want and chooses it.
They have until March 1, 2021, to cancel their 21-22 contract without penalty. If your student isn’t ready to make a decision yet, that’s okay! They can still choose to live on campus after March 1 - the process just looks a bit different.
If you have questions, please connect with us at housing@iastate.edu, call us at 515-294-2900.

If your student is looking to stay on campus, but really wants their own room, we have plenty of options for them!
We’re adding single rooms to Maple, Willow and Larch halls for next year!, too Your student could get their OWN room with a single set of furniture (plus an extra wardrobe - because who doesn’t want more closet space?). It’s the perfect way to experience the halls, be close to everything and have their own space to call home.
If they are looking at the “suite” life, Buchanan Hall is another option for a single room. In single suites, they have their own room and share the bathroom (which connects two rooms) with one other person.
Finally, in the residence hall your student can opt for a double as single room. It’s a room in a res hall that your student can have to themselves.
There’s a lot to explore - make sure to click those links and check out all the details! And, remember, your student can also choose to stay in a double room and be part of our community next year!

Celebrating Black History Month
There are a number of events scheduled across campus in February - both virtual and in person - that honor, recognize and celebrate the achievements of African Americans. To see a list of events, click here.
Martin Hall is named in honor of Archie and Nancy Martin. The Martins provided counsel and housing to African-American students attending Iowa State College in the 1930s and 1940s. George Washington Carver would room with the Martins when he returned to Ames. To read more about the Martins and their impact at Iowa State, click here.
At right is a portrait of Archie and Nancy Martin that hangs in the main den in Martin Hall. Their original house is depicted in the painting behind them.

Staff Spotlight:
Nate Wise
Iowa State’s apartment community consists of three areas: Frederiksen Court, Schilletter Village and University Village (the latter two commonly known as SUV). In all, that’s 166 buildings and over 2,500 students. If a student has an issue with anything in their apartment, Nate Wise and his staff are ready with the solution.
Wise serves as the Manager of Apartment Facilities for the Department of Residence. His main goal: To make sure the students are taken care of. “I want to make sure the students have what they need and are comfortable where they are at to get their stuff done,” he said.

Did you know there are four dining centers on campus? That’s right - UDM (our largest dining center) and Friley Windows (our newest facility) on the west side of campus, Storms on the south side (primarily serving students in Wallace and Wilson halls) and Seasons Marketplace on the east side. Your student can use their meal plan at any of these all-you-care-to-dine facilities.
Seasons Marketplace is located in the first floor of the Maple-Willow-Larch-Commons. It’s just minutes away for residents in Buchanan, Geoffroy, Birch, Welch, Roberts, Barton, Lyon and Freeman to enjoy! Season offers Breakfast, lunch and dinner options and is open until 8:30 - 9 pm depending on the night. Check out the latest menu to get an idea of the large variety options that are available daily.
Next time you’re on campus ask your student to treat you to a meal at Seasons - and get a taste of all that our chefs has to offer.

Iowa State Responds!
It's been one year since the University opened its Emergency Operation Center in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. To recognize all the hard work and innovation that has happened in that year, the University compiled a collection of stories that highlight some of the hard work that has occurred to keep the university running. You can read about the efforts of our Campus Life Team at the links below - as a bonus, the Dining story has our famous carmelita recipe you can make at home!

Even though certain restrictions have been lifted in public spaces in Iowa, the face covering requirement and physical distancing protocols are still in effect on campus. The city of Ames also continues to require face coverings in public. Your student was recently reminded through Canvas that the requirement is still in effect, and encouraged to continue to follow the Cyclones Cares behaviors on and off campus.

And as a reminder, the testing site at Johnny’s in Hilton Coliseum is open. If your student is experiencing COVID-19 symptoms or has had close contact with a known positive case they can make an appointment online to get tested.
