Alka Joshi's debut novel,

he Henna Artist
, is the story of a young woman who escapes an abusive marriage in post independence Jaipur, India, where she becomes a henna artist—and confidante—to upper class women. This portrait of one woman’s struggle for fulfillment in a society pivoting between the traditional and the modern opens a door into a world that is at once lush and fascinating, stark and cruel.

Novel Wine and Tea Tastings
|

Author Lisa See transports readers to the remote mountains of China's Yunnan Province, where the Akha ethnic minority harvest Pu-erh teas—some of the most
sought-after teas in China—in
her novel,
The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane
.
See's husband suggested that since many people have never heard of Pu’er tea she might devise a way for readers and book clubs to taste it. See turned to
Bana Tea Company
owner Linda Louie, with whom See traveled while researching her novel, to create a
tea tasting kit
.
See and Louie selected authentic Pu-erh teas and created tasting notes and a guide to different flavors. "Readers
love to have an activity or food that ties into the book," See told us. "They loved the tea and the guide."
One of our GalleyMatch book clubs recently sampled teas as described in See's novel, and shared highlights: c
omparing the teas, learning their traits such as
hui gan
(the finish) and
cha qi
(tea energy), tea fermentation, and the differences between raw and ripe Pu-erh.
For her new novel,
The Island of Sea Women
,
about women divers on the Korean island of Jeju,
See connected with Yoon-hee Kim, a Korean tea master and culinary expert in Los Angeles, who created a
t
asting kit
featuring a selection of traditional Korean teas, a Korean tea cookie, a candy made from a Jeju island orange, where the novel takes place, and a recipe for Korea tea snacks.

The French Winophiles, members of a virtual wine tasting group that blog about wine, food, and France jumped at the chance read Kristin Harmel's novel
The Winemaker's Wife
through our
GalleyMatch
program.
"Historical fiction set in Champagne during World War II was right up our alley," says member
Camilla Mann, who proposed that members post book reviews, wine commentary, and book-inspired wine and food pairings.
"The novel was a perfect fit for our wine pouring group," adds Mann. "The prose is vivid, the characters are brave, fragile, and resilient. This heart-wrenching tale gives insight into those who lived and survived in the Champagne region during this horrific part of our global history."
