Black History is American History

While we celebrate and honor many achievements during Black History Month, we stand in the recognition that such a celebration of not only Black Americans, but of our shared American history cannot be confined to one month alone. When Carter G. Woodson sought to educate people about Black history and culture, he did so with the goal that we would broaden our collective consciousness.

We hope that this month you took the opportunity to explore African American Heritage Sites in and around the County, learn more about the stories of historically Black neighborhoods like Ken-Gar, Scotland, and Emory Grove, or supported Black-owned businesses

We urge you not to relegate the contributions of any people to a singular point in time but to find ways to educate yourself and celebrate the rich cultures that call this County and Nation home.

Guaranteed Income Pilot Program

Councilmember Will Jawando speaks with MoCo BOOST participants

MoCo BOOST Event

On February 18, MoCo BOOST participants and their families gathered for an event at Bohrer Park in Gaithersburg. We had a wonderful time of fellowship, food, games, painting, learning more about available resources, and getting to know each other.

We thank Councilmember Will Jawando, who attended the event and participated in a Q&A session with participants. To learn more about MoCo BOOST, Montgomery County's Guaranteed Income Pilot Program, click here.

Community of Engagement (CoE)

Exploring Implicit Bias

Our Community of Engagement highlights and supports the strengths of Montgomery County residents, nonprofits, and grassroots organizations.

On February 21, we were excited to welcome back Dr. Rodney Glasgow of the Glasgow Group to lead an interactive community conversation around identity development, implicit bias, and the lived experiences of our social selves. The conversation also focused on how our identities intersect and shape how we act, react, and interact in the world.

Opportunity to Help

Family members and our community mourn the loss of Melanie Diaz, who passed away in a fire at the Arrive apartment building in Silver Spring on February 18. In times like these, we remember the importance of community and supporting each other. A GoFundMe page has been set up to support the family through this difficult time. If you would like to contribute, please click here.

Welcome to our Collab Corner. Each month, we ask a few Collaboration Council staff members to share a little about their personal interests or pastimes - things they've been doing to relax, recharge, learn something new, or just have fun.

I consider myself a life-long learner, and so reading has always been one of my life’s greatest pleasures. My life path has been guided and illuminated by so many writers of all backgrounds. I read a lot of nonfiction, mixed in with fiction by mostly Asian American writers. One of my favorite novels of all times is Pachinko by Korean American writer Min Jin Lee. It is a historical novel of 5 generations of a Korean family who encounter racism and discrimination during the periods of both the Japanese occupation of Korea, and World War II. The book is a masterpiece that I would highly recommend!

I recently saw my first live concert in over two years; due to the pandemic, I missed live shows! It was one of my favorite artists, Robert Glasper, an amazing pianist and songwriter. The concert took place at the Kennedy Center, and it was the tenth anniversary of his album "Black Radio." As it happens, I saw him live at Bohemian Caverns ten years ago, playing this same album. Life has changed so much since the release of that album; Bohemian Caverns is sadly closed down. Still, the beautiful thing about good music is that it endures and gets better with time. If you haven't already, I encourage you to give the album "Black Radio" a listen.

Thank you for your continued support of children, youth and families in Montgomery County.
