Non-Opioid Pain Relievers Beat Opioids After Dental Surgery


A combination of acetaminophen (Tylenol) and ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) controls pain after wisdom tooth removal better than opioids, according to an RSDM study that could change how dentists treat post-surgical pain by Dean Cecile A. Feldman, Associate Dean for Graduate Programs Janine Fredericks-Younger, and their team.

Experienced Dental Surgeon Gets Renewed Look on Dentistry



When Olusegun Olaopa got board-certified as an oral maxillofacial surgeon in Nigeria, he felt he got what he needed to make a significant impact. But he soon realized his passion alone wasn’t enough with the limited resources of the country. He decided to change his own path and take his career to the US, enrolling in RSDM.A year into the program, his views on dentistry began to transform.

A just-released study of the effects of fluoride on populations outside of the United States is fueling the debate. It's raising an unnecessary concern, said Assistant Professor of Pediatric Dentistry Mary Beth Giacona at a Rutgers Today story and discussed the issues in the debate about water fluoridation.

In Memoriam

Six Decades of Service



Rutgers School of Dental Medicine alumnus and Professor of Diagnostic Sciences Carmine J. Lo Monaco ’64 passed away on Jan. 28, 2025. He was 87 years old.


 “Carmine was well known to all faculty, staff, students, and alumni of RSDM and will be missed by all,” said Steven Singer, chair of the Department of Diagnostic Sciences.
