February Jamaica Series
Chapter Two

February has been designated as the month to raise money for the Chantilly Early Childhood Institution (the Basic School). The school was created by members of the Chantilly community to promote an early learning system for their 3- to 5-year-old children. Rue and Daphne Gordon helped to make this dream become reality when they returned from England (see SPC newsletter – Feb 5, 2021)

Like our schools here in the USA, the Covid 19 pandemic has disrupted the Jamaican children’s learning patterns. School administrators and teachers have been working hard to explore different teaching methods to help the children. In a third world country, the lack of resources in the home and community adds an extra burden to the problem.

In addition to educating the children, the Basic School provides breakfast and lunch. For many children these are the only meals they may receive.

Mrs. Margaret Cohen is the head administrator of the Basic School. Mrs. Cohen recently sent this letter to St Paul’s parishioners explaining how the Covid 19 pandemic is affecting the school.

The goal of this fundraiser is to raise the $8,000 that we have been able to send to Basic School on a yearly basis. The cost of tuition for a child 3 to 5 years old is $250 for 10 months of education and meals. Any amount would be appreciated. Please consider giving to help the children of Chantilly, Jamaica.

Thank you,
