February/March 2018

"I prefer winter and fall, when you feel the bone structure of the landscape. Something waits beneath it; the whole story doesn't show." ~ Andrew Wyeth

Like an artist acutely observing the "bone structure" of the landscape, the practice of mindfulness draws us into noticing the unfurling of the present moment. Often the present moment is nearly undetectable in our daily busyness, yet the practice of meditation seems too abstract and esoteric. Don't get bogged down with the perceived challenge of formal meditation...instead I invite you, this month, to step into the informal practice of mindfulness, no meditation cushion or yoga mat required! Check out my 1-5-7 plan (highlighted in this newsletter) as a great way to get started with the informal practice of mindfulness. Let me know some of your favorite ways to increase your informal mindfulness.

Make the waning winter season a time of acute observation by practicing informal mindfulness...be surprised by what you notice.

Wishing you a mindful month,

Pamela Katz Ressler, MS, RN, HNB-BC

Meditation Maintenance

2017/2018 Schedule

Meditation Maintenance Sessions

You are welcome to attend each month or simply on an occasional basis. You will find a supportive and welcoming respite in the midst of your busyness.

1-5-7 Plan for Mindfulness
tea for the soul
Mindfulness is simple...but not easy! We often get stuck in the effort of "finding time", trying to craft the "perfect" space or environment for meditation, etc. Mindfulness simply means: paying attention, in a particular way, to the present moment without judgement.

Here's a radical idea for building informal mindfulness that you may want to try this month...stop trying so hard and simply commit to 1 informal mindfulness practice (probably something you are already doing) for 5 minutes for 7 consecutive days. You will be surprised with the results!

Reflections on #HaikuChallenge18
Thank you to all who participated in this year's #HaikuChallenge18...either by writing or reading the haikus posted each day. What a fun way to mindfully enter the new year. A round of applause for all of you!

Participants posted their mindful haikus on Facebook, Twitter, on personal blogs and in journals. #HaikuChallenge18 went international as well this year. Those using the hashtag of Stress Resource's #HaikuChallenge 18 spanned the globe and posted in several languages.

So what did I learn?...that mindfulness is universal, something we humans connect with and hunger for in our lives.

I look forward to creating more mindful challenges throughout 2018...stay tuned. If you would like to read some of the haikus written for #HaikuChallenge 18, check out my blog.

Using Apps for Mindfulness Training
I often field questions about the benefit or lack of benefit of digital meditation and mindfulness apps.

You may have noticed a plethora of choices available and wondered about how to discern helpful from hype. While digital apps cannot take the place of developing a self-generated meditation practice, judicious use may help to strengthen and sustain a practice. For a digital app to be helpful to a mindfulness practice it should support and/or enhance:
  • Attention
  • Awareness
  • Action
