Connecting and Recharging: Thrive in Joy’s First Advisor Retreat

Thrive in Joy's dynamic Advisors and energetic C11 Program Coordinator, all of whom are USC students, convened in late January at Thrive in Joy’s co-working space in DTLA for our first annual Advisor Retreat. Grounded in connection, reflection, and intention, the team had a chance to focus on how Club Thrive in Joy members at each of their schools will bring passion and purpose to their spring capstone Entrepreneurial Social Impact Projects (ESIPs). Meet Thrive in Joy’s Newest Board Member: Dr. Danny Garcia

We had the opportunity to sit down with Dr. Garcia last month to gain some insights into his career and why he gives his time and guidance to Thrive in Joy. Here’s what we learned:

Dr. Garcia, tell us about your area of expertise.

I am a Board-Certified Family Physician practicing in the Long Beach area. I have a deep passion for serving the underserved migrant Spanish-speaking community who has the greatest need for access to quality healthcare.

What inspired you to follow this career path?

I was inspired by the challenge of becoming a physician and the fulfillment I knew I would experience by helping people improve their health and quality of life. I recognized early on that a career in healthcare would be both meaningful and rewarding. I truly love what I do each day and feel grateful to serve my community.

What is it about Thrive in Joy that aligns with your values?

Thrive in Joy strongly aligns with my values of service, mentorship, and community outreach. I admire the organization’s commitment to giving back through impactful programs such as the Dominican Republic trips, the C11 high school mentorship program, and community engagement events like the baseball and the beach event. These initiatives foster connection, inspiration, and opportunity.

What impact do you hope to make as a Thrive in Joy Board Member?

As a Board Member, I hope to contribute meaningfully to the continued growth and expansion of Thrive in Joy. I am passionate about inspiring students to pursue careers in the medical field and would love to play an active role in developing programs that strengthen our presence in the community. My goal is to be hands-on, collaborative, and fully engaged in advancing the organization’s mission.

Thrive in Joy is grateful for Dr. Danny Garcia’s commitment to serve our mission. As a dedicated physician, community advocate, and passionate mentor, Dr. Garcia (AKA "Danny") is responsible for expanding healthcare access and opportunity to those who need it most. His heart for service and deep connection to the community make him a powerful addition to our team of 11 Board Members. Thank you, Danny, for your service!

Reflections

From Mary Fagnano, Nick's mom, Thrive in Joy Co-Founder and Executive Director

My sister, Patty, captured this photo the moment her dog, Dasher, and his friend took a break after spending a good 30 minutes prancing in the snow. Dasher looks like he’s begging his friend saying, “Come on, let’s have some more fun!” While his sensible friend is saying, “Nah, I’m good…can’t you just enjoy a little ‘down time’?”

I think we all need a little more down time and less dashing these days. As the headlines jolt us into new realities, finding a time and place to connect with our inner peace is the one thing within our control. It’s no surprise that students at three of our five high schools are focusing their spring events on mental and physical well-being.

A popular belief says it takes 21 days to make something a habit and 90 days for it to become a permanent life change. March 20th is the first day of spring and June 21st is the first day of summer—just about 90 days. If you were like me, life at the beginning of 2026 was just too busy to think about New Year’s resolutions. But I like the idea of this seasonal approach to thinking about the habit I want to start (or break) on March 20. If I stick with it until the first day of summer, I'll let you know how my life has changed. If you try it, I'd love to hear how it worked for you.

To all my friends who join me in observing this Lenten season and to those celebrating Passover or Easter before the next newsletter comes out—blessings on your spiritual journey, may God protect you and bring about a better world, and may the Easter season bring you hope and joy.
