Great Loss to Jefferson Park
It is with great sadness that we regretfully announce the passing of Louie Werthmuller, a long-time resident and board member of Jefferson Park.
A man of many talents, great energy, and generosity who gave much to his neighborhood--that was Louie. He was a big man, bigger than life, with a “can do” attitude. Covid claimed him, and it is still hard to believe it won. Perhaps his wife, Joanie, who passed away last year, wanted him with her. If you live in the northwest corner of Jefferson Park, you well may have seen Louie or his wife, Joanie, walking their little black dog.
His home is evidence of Louie’s great energy and talent. It features exotic plantings, ponds, streams, ramadas, fireplaces, and turtle enclosures, all built and designed by Louie. His copper art was well known. Louie was a talented cook and held dinners in his oasis to raise funds for neighborhood projects.
He and his wife lived in Jefferson Park for forty-one years. As a former board member of the non-profit Friends of Jefferson Park and JPNA, Louie’s contributions were many and generous. How often, when a project was being considered, was he overheard saying, “Let me contribute to that”? He also donated his time and energy as a representative of Area 6, at clean-ups, and in installing the monument sign in the traffic circle near his home. And, if you were lucky, you were one of his clients.
He was a talented hairdresser. In 2018, Louie and Joanie contributed to the oral history library of Jefferson Park. Joanie described his career and recounted how they met:
“He has been a hairdresser for 50 years. That’s how I met him. I wanted to become a blonde, so I went to this shop where he was a partner, and his partner made me a blonde, and of course, Louie saw me and…we started dating. Louie left that salon and he bought his own. He gave up the salons and went to KMS Hair Care Products…for twenty years and he sold the product, and then he taught at a beauty school.”
Louie very recently retired from his shop on Tucson Blvd, where his clients were many. And many also became his friends, because you could hardly sit in his chair and not admire the man. We shall miss him.
In late March, a memorial open house will be held in Louie's honor.

Safety Committee Report
Jefferson Park leads city in Burglaries
The information above was shared at the January 25 Safety meeting. The three officers present emphasized the increase in the number of burglaries in JP and noted that they were the highest in the city (19 in 91 days). They noted that the greatest number occurred around the holidays when the UA students (and others) were on break and out of town. We have e-mailed Julie Katsel, UA Senior Director, Government Relations / Local and Community, to ask if there is any assistance from the UA to communicate with the students. TPD will be attending the February JPNA meeting to discuss the problem. See agenda at http://www.jeffersonpark.info/

RTA and Grant Rd Phase 5/6 coming 2026-7-8?
Living with the "wasp waist" that is our section of Grant Road
Sick of living with the "wasp waist", the narrowing of Grant Road, that begins at Santa Rita? There may be light at the end of the tunnel! If you have been following the news on the RTA (which funds road projects), and wondering if our area would be finished, then you may be interested in the latest report from Steve Kozachik on the issue. Go to; https://content.govdelivery.com/accounts/AZTUCSON/bulletins/307f0e0
"And the board voted to assure all projects that may be unfinished when the current RTA goes back to the voters will be 'at the front of the line' in RTA Next, and will be fully funded."

UA Safety Study for Mountain Avenue
Review the study and the recommendations for Mountain Ave, including the intersection at Grant Road: http://www.grantroadcoalition.com/ua-mountain-study-2022.html. Bikes and pedestrian safety have long been a concern of the residents of Jefferson Park. JPNA has forwarded these suggestions for consideration to the Department of Transportation and Mobility(DTM), and PSOMAS.

TEP - 138kV Poles
Negotiations with City - Public Meeting in March
For the past few months, TEP has been in negotiations with the City of Tucson regarding the Kino to DeMoss-Petrie Transmission Line Project. They will soon be presenting their ideas for feedback to a public audience. We just received an update, which states that TEP expects to hold a public meeting in March. Stay tuned for date, time and process.
For the time being, TEP has withdrawn its application for the CEC, Certificate for Environmental Compatibility, with the ACC. Still, TEP could refile it if negotiations with the City are not successful. If TEP refiles, July 25 is the tentatively scheduled as the new start date with the ACC. Again, we will keep you posted. Thanks for your continuing interest and support.
