First, a special thank you to the Area Representatives who will be walking the neighborhood and passing out the annual neighborhood door hangers. Several others are stepping up to distribute Area 6 where we do not yet have a representative.
Jefferson Park has partnered with the U of A and TPD to add a second special doorhanger warning neighbors of the high incident of car theft and burglary in the university area, particularity Jefferson Park.
Sorry folks, we are first in the city in that nasty statistic. And our student population is the highest target. And while thieves are hitting the kids for their computers and tech items, why not go next door and see what the homeowner has?

CITY OF TUCSON TO ASK VOTERS TO EXTEND HALF-CENT SALES TAX - Tucson's Mayor and Council Feb. 1, voted unanimously to ask residents to extend an existing half-cent sales tax that was approved by voters in 2017 and expires this year.
If passed, the funds generated will be invested in a major effort to repair, restore, resurface, or improve every local neighborhood street in Tucson over the next 10 years. It would also fund street safety improvements that benefit all users and modes, such as bicycle and pedestrian safety improvements, sidewalks, lighting, traffic signal technology, and traffic-calming infrastructure.
Voters will make their decision in a special election scheduled for May 17. The ballot measure will be known as Proposition 411. If approved, the proposition would generate an expected $740 million for road repairs and safety improvements. Mayor and Council also voted to allocate $18 million a year for five years for the purpose of funding vehicles, equipment, and similar costs for public safety functions in Police, Fire, and 911 Communications.

TEP - 138kV Poles
Negotiations with City - Public Meeting in March
|
|
As you know, for the past few months, TEP has been in negotiations with the City of Tucson regarding the Kino to DeMoss-Petrie Transmission Line Project.
On January 31, they sent an email update (see below) to neighborhoods and to the CWG (Community Working Group) members with a list of the proposed special exceptions they are seeking, for which they have been in negotiations.
From TEP:
"Some of the characteristics that are currently being considered that could allow for special exceptions from undergrounding in gateway corridors include:
- Industrial zoning
- Minimal impact on residential areas with adequate setback
- Existing transmission lines in area
- Environmentally and archeologically sensitive areas
- Overhead lines on non-gateway corridors that cross gateway corridors
- Repair or upgrade of existing facilities
- Railroad, highway and bridge crossings or conflicts with other existing underground utilities
- Electrical service to critical customers where overhead is strongly recommended for specialized operations like Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, hospitals and research facilities
- Conditions that mitigate aesthetic impact, including removal or underground installation of existing power lines and poles, increasing visual buffers and improving pedestrian environment
- The higher cost of underground installation and disparate impact on low income residents."
TEP plans to present their ideas to a public audience at a meeting in March. Stay tuned for the dates and process; we will keep you updated.
It is important that neighborhoods and groups continue to keep their residents and members informed, and ready to hold TEP accountable to the ordinances with very few exceptions.
For the time being, TEP has withdrawn its application for the CEC, Certificate for Environmental Compatibility, with the ACC. Still, TEP could refile it if negotiations with the city are not successful. If TEP refiles, and at this point, they are expected to do so, July 25 is the scheduled new date for the Line Siting hearings to start.
Thank you for your continuing interest and support. We've made a lot of progress since the Coalition joined forces, and it is critical that we continue to work together and insist upon undergrounding the lines.
