A Message from Narragansett Prevention Partnership

January was a month jam-packed with opportunities for parents and guardians to learn great tips about parenting their developing pre-teens and teens through some of the unique challenges facing families today.

A viewing of “ Screenagers NEXT Chapter: Uncovering Skills for Stress Resilience” and follow-up panel discussion at South Kingstown High School shed light on the stresses today's teens are under and how parents can help them negotiate those concerns. At a “ Communities Talk” event at Narragansett High School, attendees learned what Narragansett teens self-report regarding substance use, the types of issues our Student Resource Officer witnesses among teens, how the developing teen brain is impacted by substance use, and facts versus myths about vaping from a local expert. Also, at a collaborative event hosted by South County Hospital, NPP’s Renae Martin educated the audience about why teens act the way they do (their developing brain!) and Susan Littlefield, LMHC gave strategies for coping with teen behavior and how to parent teens. This was the first of a free 4-part parenting series at SCH.

In the weeks and months ahead, we will continue to give parents/guardians the opportunities to
add resources to their parenting toolbox. They will help to demystify the preteen/teen(s) in your life and to make parenting during these years of incredible changes seem less daunting. NPP is also pleased to be able to continue offering students at NES, NPS, and NHS a variety of opportunities to de-stress and practice mindfulness techniques.

Want more information on a hot topic? We invite you to click the flyer below to a special winter edition of a brief newsletter entitled “ Raising Healthy Teens” to learn more about the vaping issues you’ve heard about in the news. For more opportunities to “build your parenting toolbox,” watch the school listservs, this newsletter, and our Facebook page for details on upcoming events, including the next collaborative event at South County Hospital in March, which will also be advertised in local papers.

If you have questions or would like additional resources, please email Narragansett Prevention Partnership or call 401-212-3811. To see updated information about upcoming events, like us on Facebook!
Social and Emotional Learning Educator Highlight
Each month, we are happy to share a little more about one of our educators here at our schools. This month, we are once again highlighting our SEL (Social Emotional Learning) initiative, especially in our elementary school. Educators continuously collaborate with each other to create meaningful and unique ways to connect students and create wellness in our schools. Below is an educator that is directly part of this program.

What is your favorite part about working at your school?
My favorite part about working at NES is definitely the students! They make my days exciting and always greet me with a smile or a hug.

In the summer months I enjoy jogging, biking, sailing, and going to the beach!

What is one thing that your students and staff may not know about you!

A Message from Superintendent Cummings and Principal Lisa Wilson

Dear Narragansett School Community,

Thank you all for your support, compassion, and for coming together as a community to honor the life of Nayanah Applegate, a student in Mrs. Carter’s class in 2nd grade, who passed away late last month.

Nayanah was deeply loved by all the staff and students at NES. We have spoken with 2nd grade parents and will support our children through this difficult time. Our school clinicians continue to be available for students, parents, and staff to help them navigate through the experience of having someone they know or are familiar with pass away.

As a school community, we will be making plans to celebrate her. The staff and students will be planning something special to honor Nayanah Applegate and as plans develop we will inform you.

Please reach out with any questions or concerns or if you feel you need some direct help discussing this loss with your child or family.

The PTO provides the school community with many student and family friendly events. If interested in joining the PTO, please join them for their meetings every other month at 7:00. Place to be Determined.

Get your Travel Vouchers for FFA!

Last month, Abby Foster, the FFA State President and Chapter Vice President, attended the School Committee meeting with her FFA team to share that their class was taking part in selling travel voucher cards. This will help run leadership training for students in FFA programs as well as support the growth of future farmers across America by offering a profitable funding solution.

If you would like to support, you can purchase a voucher for $10 that will give you access to $100 in travel expenses for a year once signing up either online or through the app. The card offers discounts of between 5 and 50% to both local and national retailers as well as more than 1 million hotels and resorts nationwide.

To get yours, please visit the high school front office and ask how to purchase a travel voucher.

This program is intended to offer 70% profit back to local FFA programs and another 5% back to also fund state scholarships.
