For the first time, two recipients were awarded scholarships!

The Paul "Lefty" Wennik Outstanding Character Scholarship Committee was so impressed with Ileana Fournier and Jacob Calle, both exceptional student-athletes and leaders within Beyond Soccer and their schools, that they simply couldn’t choose just one. Together, Ileana and Jacob have been part of Beyond Soccer for more than 12 years, serving as positive role models and Coach Mentors for younger players in our programs.

So, how did their first semester go?

Ileana shared, “Everything has been good so far! I’ve been busy with classes, clubs, and exploring the city, and I really like it here at Boston University!”

Jacob added that his first semester at Merrimack College was “challenging but so worth it.” He continues to demonstrate the same persistence and leadership that earned him this honor.

Paul would have been so proud of these two — not only for their accomplishments, but for the way they continue to lead with character, kindness, and determination.

Former Board Chair and dear friend, Paul “Lefty” Wennik, who passed away on November 26, 2024, wasn’t just a supporter. He was our connector, our champion, and our biggest fundraiser.

Paul brought people together through his compassion, charisma, and unwavering belief that every young person deserves an equal playing field.

The Outstanding Character Scholarship was created to carry that torch. It’s not about grades or goals scored, it’s about how you show up for your teammates, your community, and yourself. (Although these recipients happen to excel in the classroom, too!)

We also celebrated our 2023 and 2024 recipients, Luiz and Eliany, who joined us at the scholarship unveiling. They continue to embody Paul’s legacy through their success at UMass Lowell and Northeastern, and through their ongoing mentorship in our programs.
