Chronicle of Philanthropy

Building Movement Project - Co-Executive Directorship Learnings

Building Movement Project (BMP) just hired a new Executive Director for the first time in 10 years - after a decade of operating under a co-directorship model. Their latest resource, Co-Executive Directorship Learnings, draws from internal documentation and interviews with former co-executive directors Frances Kunreuther and Sean Thomas-Breitfeld. Released in November, this resource captures their insights and reflections on co-directorship, including:

Leading across age, gender, and racial differences

The distinction between shared and distributed leadership

Choosing leadership structures based on an organization’s evolving needs

Viewing co-directorship as a feminist approach to leadership and management

Frances and Sean’s leadership tenure at BMP has created a rich legacy of learning and raised new questions for the field about the potential and challenges of shared leadership models. Read more!

Montgomery County Planning Commission Encouraging Affordability by Building More Housing Units

Several proposed residential developments in the county have received interest for the potential of including a handful of below-market rate units, alongside market rate units, that would be perpetually affordable to households making 80 percent or less of the area median income. This concept of offsetting the lower rents collected by allowing for additional market rate units is frequently called a “density bonus.” Some municipalities in Pennsylvania have taken this idea a step further by requiring the construction of affordable units alongside market rate units (or having a developer pay a fee in lieu of constructing the units). This concept, called inclusionary zoning, has been successfully utilized to build much-needed units where there is a demand for new, dense residential construction. While inclusionary zoning is not explicitly permitted in the Pennsylvania Municipalities Planning Code (MPC), it is an idea worth exploring. More Information.

Dating violence is more common than you may think, especially among teens and young adults: 1 in 3 U.S. teens will experience physical, sexual, or emotional abuse from someone they’re in a relationship with before becoming adults. And nearly half (43%) of U.S. college women report experiencing violent or abusive dating behaviors.

Each February, young adults and their loved ones nationwide raise awareness about teen dating violence through Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month (TDVAM). This annual, month-long effort focuses on advocacy and education to stop dating abuse before it starts. Learn more!

Maternal health is a pressing issue in the United States, highlighted by decreases in obstetric services and increasing maternal morbidity. Every year, between 50,000 and 60,000 women suffer from severe maternal morbidity — unexpected outcomes of labor and delivery that result in significant short- or long-term consequences to a woman’s health.

Furthermore, the U.S. sees stark racial disparities in maternal outcomes, with non-Hispanic Black women being three to four times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than non-Hispanic white women. Learn more.
