Wow, another month has slipped by so quickly and now we are into the month of February! We are pleased to see the days get longer and we celebrate the fact that spring is on the horizon! We also look forward to Valentine’s Day…a time to warm our hearts, even though it is still cold outside!

We are excited to hear that many of our students are preparing for the upcoming Sherwood Park Music Festival that is quickly approaching, as well as Crescendo's Video Showcase that is also coming up in April. We love watching the students choose pieces that will further ignite a love for playing or singing… and we also enjoy the experience of watching them master each piece! Parents, please be sure to watch your email for specific festival registration details and instructions regarding how to register your child for the Festival. You can create your festival profile anytime so we would suggest doing this soon. Also, please remember, the final day of late registration will be Sat., Feb. 25. Our Crescendo Video Showcase will be held the same week as the Festival (April 17 - 22), and registration for this is due by early March. More information regarding registration will be coming to you soon!

We thank you again for your ongoing support of our family business and as always, please reach out with any questions or concerns you may have. We are always here to help and we welcome feedback! We wish you a wonderful “month of love”!

Warm Regards,

Dean and Leanne Cummings

TEACHER FEATURE

Kate Ashton

Each month we like to feature one of our talented Crescendo teachers. This month's Teacher Feature is Kate Ashton.

Kate’s understanding, curiosity, and passion for music make her a valuable member of the Crescendo teaching team. She has learned a great deal throughout her diverse musical journey and is thrilled to have the opportunity to impart her knowledge to others as well as share her love of music with like-minded, curious people.

Kate started playing the piano at a young age, and because she was writing her own songs and performing for her family regularly, it wasn’t long before she was put into music lessons as well as the local musical theatre company. In junior high, she took part in jazz band and started exploring her own abilities as a singer/songwriter. In high school, Kate was part of the creative music program at Bev Facey and started discovering her love of performing, writing, and gigging with a rock band. In university, she studied jazz and contemporary popular music as a composition major, where she discovered her passion for film scoring, recording and producing, arranging and orchestrating, and for cine-ethnomusicology.

Kate is currently working on building her portfolio for grad school, by writing essays on various topics in music, and is also planning to record and release an EP.

Some fun facts about Kate are that she loves: mountains, the ocean, and forests; all animals (especially her cats); mythology, cultural anthropology, philosophy, and history; the moon and stars; and coffee. She dreams of living somewhere tropical, where she can see a night sky that’s bright, vivid, and colourful every day.

Don't miss out!

FRIENDLY REMINDERS...

Let’s continue to help each other by taking the basic precautions. As such, we encourage everyone to please wear a mask whenever they have mild cold-like symptoms. If you are feeling unwell, please call us and we will be pleased to switch to a Zoom lesson or we can send you a video lesson.

We ask you to please, protect yourself and others by:

·        Washing your hands

·        Wearing a mask

·        Sanitizing hands when entering the studio

·        Covering your coughs and sneezes

·        Practicing social distancing when possible

Video Showcase

As a music school that encourages performances and sees a definite value in performing, we try to offer a variety of opportunities throughout the year. As an alternative to the Sherwood Park Music Festival, we are looking forward to our upcoming 6th annual Crescendo Video Showcase. Showcase provides an opportunity for students to sign up and perform a prepared piece in the comfort of our studio. We will video this performance, and the video will be sent on to our highly decorated adjudicators to receive comprehensive and valuable feedback. Our top video showcase performances will be awarded and recognized at our year-end recitals. We invite you to perform one or more songs at our April Video Showcase. Any style of music is welcome and we provide lots of flexibility regarding the types of performance and music that is presented!

So your son or daughter has just started music lessons. You’ve found a kind, knowledgeable teacher, set up a practice space, and bought an instrument.

But here’s the kicker: No matter how excited your child is initially, there comes a point in time when your son or daughter simply doesn’t feel like practicing.

To help you avoid endless fights and keep you from pulling your hair out, we’ve put together this collection of strategies from music teachers, bloggers, and child psychologists to help you motivate your child to practice. Read the full article here

Contest!

Tree of Love

To celebrate Valentine's Day we have a special, heart-warming contest this month!

To enter:

Starting February 1, there will be hearts available at the front desk. Please take one heart and create an acrostic, a haiku (any kind of poem is fine), or draw us a picture about music on it.

Acrostic: Write a short poem where the letters of a word are used as the first letter of another word to represent your love for music.

Haiku: This poem is made of three lines where the first line is five syllables, the second is made up of seven syllables and the third line is five syllables. But ANY style/short poem is welcome!

Picture: Draw us a picture that represents your love for music.

Once finished, please make sure your FIRST AND LAST NAME and AGE are written on the back, then put your heart in the mailbox on the table so "Cupid can place it on the Tree of Music Love"!

On February 18, Cupid will pick 3 hearts from our draw. The winner can choose from a Crescendo hoodie, t-shirt, water bottle, or to-go coffee cup.

This contest will run from February 1st to February 18th!

BENEFITS OF THE RCM CURRICULUM

“A student is almost always motivated to practice when he leaves his lessons feeling capable.” – Frances Clark, Pianist

If you are a music learner, you have probably heard of the “RCM” curriculum. RCM stands for The Royal Conservatory of Music, which is a Canadian-based curriculum that has ‘grades’ of music learning. The Royal Conservatory of Music has levelled curriculum for a variety of instruments, including voice, piano, guitar, and more! A huge benefit of the RCM curriculum is that it also has exams available for each grade of music, and in some cases, it can even count for high school credit. At Crescendo Music Studios we highly recommend taking a music exam every year, or at least every second year! There are so many benefits to music examinations, and we will be talking about them below.

  • Music Examinations Provide Progress Benchmarks. It is incredibly important for both the student and their parents to see progress when they are learning an instrument.
  • RCM Exams Count for Credits in School! The Royal Conservatory of Music is recognized as a private music study that may be eligible for high school credits!
  • More information can be found on the RCM Website -- and piano isn’t the only eligible instrument! Voice, Guitar, Violin, and a multitude of brass instruments are also eligible for extra credits.
  • We Believe in Holistic Music Learning! At Crescendo, we strive to teach our students a variety of skills that help them to become more well-rounded musicians.
  • What if I Don’t Learn Out of the RCM Books? No problem! At Crescendo Music Studios we have designed Crescendo exams that can be taken by any student, any instrument, and any repertoire.
