Intentional Connections:

The Power of a Multidisciplinary Team

By Melanie Pignotti, LCPC, CAC Chief Executive Officer

At the heart of every Child Advocacy Center is a simple but powerful truth: no one discipline can meet the needs of a child who has experienced abuse and trauma. The multidisciplinary team (MDT) approach is one of our greatest strengths, bringing together professionals from law enforcement, child protection, prosecution, medical and mental health services, victim advocacy and forensic interviewing. Each discipline offers a unique lens and expertise, and the real impact comes from how these perspectives work together in true partnership

This collaborative structure isn’t just a best practice; it consistently leads to better outcomes for children. When information is shared, when decisions are made collectively and when each professional understands their role in the larger picture, children receive a more coordinated, trauma‑informed response. Families experience less confusion. Investigations are more thorough. Services are timelier. And children are better supported on their path toward healing.

Every discipline contributes something essential...

MDT Training Recap

On January 27, CAC hosted a Multidisciplinary Team training, which highlighted the coordinated, trauma-informed response to child abuse and violence. Forensic and Advocacy Services Director Jessica Montgomery explained that the session featured perspectives from CAC staff, Advocate Children’s Hospital Child Protection Team and the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office, focusing on best practices and collaboration across disciplines.

MDT Services and Training Manager, Bri Kness, added that attendees from approximately six police departments — both new and those familiar with CAC — participated in presentations on CAC 101, forensic interviewing, medical aspects of child abuse, the State’s Attorney’s Office perspective and Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) technology. Participants shared that the training was engaging and helpful in understanding how MDT partners work together during investigations.

Teen Dating Violence Prevention Month

February is Teen Dating Violence Prevention Month, and CAC knows that supporting safe, healthy relationships starts with clear guidance.

CAC’s safe and strong relationship resource was created for teens (and adults) navigating friendships, dating and everything in between. Developed by Forensic Interviewer Taylor Edmunds and our FAS team, this resource offers clear guidance on what is and is not OK in a friendship or dating relationship.
